Bags have been a massive part of the fashion industry, not only as an accessory they’ve come into making their own statement now.
Karl Lagerfeld was the one who had the fascination of the micro bag before anyone else: For the Fendi Spring/Summer 2015 collection, the brand’s signature Peekaboo top-handle style and attached fluffy outsized charms that appeared to be bigger than the bag itself was shrunken down.

Then came Jacquemus who revived the trend back in Fall 2017. The designer behind Jacquemus, Simon Porte, first introduced the ‘Le Chiquito’ bag, they were two models in his Fall 2017 Ready-to-Wear collection were holding tiny bags. And yet, the tiny bag made a huge impression.
The French designer kicked off Paris Fashion Week with his autumn/winter 2019 show and introduced us to, the aptly named “Mini Le Chiquito” bag. Measuring a tiny 10cm x 8cm, and has a celebrity fan base including Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, while on a trip, Dua Lipa brought her straw mini Jacquemus bag with her to the beach in L.A and Bella Hadid sported it aswell.

It returned furthermore for the brand’s pink carpeted SS20 collection – proving that micro bags will reign long into early next year’s fashion cycle. Models walked the Jacquemus with tiny handbags hanging from their fingers or slung over their shoulder with cross-body straps. They were spotted in at four different colors – white, bright red, orange and dark green – and featured a tiny golden ‘J’. The “larger” versions of the Le Chiquito bag, which were priced at £400, have already sold out. The micro bag at a whooping £258.
Stealing barbie’s bags now, are we?
On the streets of Paris, its become common now to see these mini bags. Nylon Prada bags and Dior Saddle bag are favorites between Instagrammers. This spring, Fendi brought back Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite mini bag, the Baguette. One season later, carrying a mini bag in varying brightly colored hues were models who walked Jacquemus’s F/W 2018 collection.

From Chanel and BOYY to Staud and By Far, we’ve now seen countless designer takes on this style. Chanel took the trend a step ahead by layering two mini bags, or ‘side packs’, on models in their Spring/Summer 2019 show. Givenchy’s cross-body, cute purses with loop handles were slung around the wrists of models at Marc Jacobs, ornamental little lunch boxes were seen at Versace, and the strap of a teeny-tiny pouch was laced all the way up to a model’s arm at Maryam Nassir Zadeh.

“The little bag carries a big punch this summer!” says Neiman Marcus’s SVP and Fashion Director, Ken Downing. “The biggest mini bag trends we are seeing [now] are crazy colors, patterns, prints, and most importantly, embellishment,” says Downing, who cites dimensional flowers, embroidery, seashells, tassels, and even fringe as the top trends this season. “The little bag looks darling with day dresses and fun for after work”, says Downing.
The Outnet’s Head of Content, Claudia Mahoney, has found a similar pattern among micro bags recently, citing embellished bags as one of the top trends of the moment. “This season, we’re [also] seeing the trend to layer up mini-bags across the body, wearing more than one bag at a time, allowing the wearer to play with different colorways and textures and, on a practical level, be able to carry more than just her phone and keys.”
Carrying a mini bag enables mobility and feels liberating; less to carry, less to worry about. It’s important to always remember that these mini bags are merely accessories.
“When it comes to high fashion statement pieces keep utility at bay and if you’re looking for utility, go buy yourself a backpack!”
