Ever since I switched to an all-natural skincare routine, I haven’t been able to stop talking about it. Seriously. Ask my friends, my family, my husband—my obsession for this new found love of natural skincare is too much for any listener to handle.
Whenever I start speaking about it their faces just go all ‘NOT AGAIN!’ I know I get it; it gets a little too much. But I just can’t help it. After struggling with acne for almost all my teenage life, I recently tried switching over completely to a 100% natural skincare routine.
Simple ingredients, homemade grandma remedies (that you should never ignore, trust me), and many items you could probably find in your kitchen or garden.
I can honestly tell you without any doubt that my skin has never appeared or felt better, and the acne and scars I used to try and hide with loads of heavy make-up and creams are fading and gone.
It’s hard to believe that I spent years buying product after product with fancy ingredients to clear my skin (that actually cost me a lot), and the answer ended up being the most undemanding, inexpensive things I could find.
‘It hugely affected my Self-Confidence’
When I hit puberty, which wasn’t one of the delightful experiences I ever had, I started getting acne, which then turned into some scarring and years of frustration.
But, what bothered me the most was that this problem didn’t only take up on my skin; it hugely affected my self-confidence and morale.
This one time, when I was on my period, the break-outs got so awful that someone actually asked me if I had shingles. There were a lot of tears and of course embarrassment.
When I first started trying to treat my acne, I would read hundreds of beauty blogs, buy the strongest products I could find and use them religiously, that actually cost me a fortune.
When it came to my skin I never thought twice before scraping off those dollars. To this day I still regret spending that much on shitty products, where I could’ve just invested the money on food. (I’m a big-time foodie)
‘Little did she know…’
For most of my life, my skin-care consisted of Proactiv, Neutrogena, Clean and Clear, Garnier and what not. From oral antibiotics, topical antibiotics, Accutane, ointments you name it, I tried them all in an effort to treat my skin problems.
‘And surprisingly I did notice a little change with my skin.’
…Not really. In reality, none of these tactics worked- or if they did, my skin would only clear up for just a little time before the acne, zits, redness, dermatitis, and a lot of other issues came back with a vengeance.
So, I started using a steroid cream as prescribed by my dermatologist. They worked so frickin’ well that all my acne, that pretty much dominated my face, was gone for 2 years. All I had to do was apply a layer of cream every night before bed and my skin would be just fine the next day.
Except gradually, I had to use more and more cream to keep dermatitis at bay. I’d run through my tube pretty quickly. The harsh ingredients would dry my skin out like a raisin, and then I would have to moisturize my face like crazy.
It was a constant, annoying cycle that never really cleared up the acne.
If my life was a movie, this would be the part where the frame freezes on my smiling, happy face, the screen goes from colorful to a grainy black and white picture and the familiar voiceover starts: “Little did she know…the creams were actually creating havoc to her skin.”
As it turns out, while steroids are a standard treatment for dermatitis, they’re also one of the main causes of dermatitis. The more you use, the more the skin builds up a “resistance,” and the stronger dermatitis becomes.
Natural Skincare to the rescue!
I tried covering it up with heavy makeup and all but in the end, it all went down the drain. I dove deep into the internet, read all the skincare blogs I could, asked people about it and to my surprise the suggestion that came from my fellow sufferers revolved around pure, basic, natural ingredients.
Was I living in the dark this whole time? I guess so.
I gave it a few tries, and the natural ingredients- you know, the ones people often do not prefer over man-made chemically produced kind-worked literal wonders on my skin.
Within a month of spritzing my face with a homemade mist of watered-down tea tree oil, my dermatitis was nearly gone. Yep, natural ingredients take time to blend in and work on your skin but trust me they help tremendously.
I followed a simple routine of rosewater or coconut oil and even Manuka honey mask to cleanse, diluted apple cider vinegar to tone, Mud masks with natural green clay to exfoliate, jojoba oil to moisturize and it gave me better results than any prescription I’d ever taken.
This brings us Today. I have discovered a few simple ingredients…not products…but natural, inexpensive, basic ingredients that have been hiding in my kitchen in plain sight have been a miracle for my skin.
They work, heal, smooth, and moisturize my skin better than anything I’ve ever tried.
Don’t be worried if you notice breakouts or more oily skin within the first few tries or so. Keep up the routine, let your skin get used to the oils and you’ll start seeing much clearer, soft, smoother and healthier skin.
