The frenzy and fascination around the lives of royals are worldwide if not universal.
There is no doubt that being the face of age-old aristocracy they are supposed to be the finest in their walk and their talk. The articles once seen to be worn by the crown-headed legacies get off the racks in seconds and the website of their designers gets crashed.
No doubt the Royals have been making headlines in the world of fashion for centuries (Not even exaggerating). The newest addition to the royals of England, making waves for vogue enthusiasts everywhere is Meghan Markle who tied knots with Prince Harry a year and a half ago. Often seen as shunning the royal protocols by wearing black nail paint and ditching her nude pantyhose, Meghan is like a breath of fresh air in the aristocracy scene of British.
Kate Middleton, on the other hand, is one of the most impeccably dressed royals who rocks her ladylike feminine wardrobe with the panache of her own. There’s simply never a time the Duchess of Cambridge looks out of place. From her perfectly tailored outfits to her envy-inducing glossy hair, she’s the consummate example of clean, classic dressing.
Both the regal personalities have brought tons of vigour fashion looks in the years followed by their entry in the imperial palace. But how different both the duchesses really are and how do they manage to splash drops of their uniqueness into their attire choices?
● Wedding Dress
Both the royal weddings, seven years apart, caught the attention of the whole world. But the most eye-catching detail in the celebrations was their wedding gowns whose glimpse made the whole world gasp in awe. While Meghan chose for subtle boat neck haute couture gown Givenchy gown designed by Clare Waight Keller that was seen as a little bit of an old soul in a new incarnation, Kate in her 2011 wedding wore a beautifully laced Alexander McQueen gown designed by Sarah Burton, the fashion house’s creative director. This look of the dutchess of Cambridge became an iconic wedding gown with long lace sleeves, a v-neckline, and an epic train. The wedding gown that inspired countless copycats and is still one of the most talked about royal bridal gowns of recent years and hence this round is obviously won by Kate’s hands down.
● Pregnancy Look
This year Kate gave birth to a little prince while Meghan broke the news of her pregnancy. While Meghan is new to the world of maternity dressing, but Kate is a pro at this stage. Both the ladies in their initial stages as a mother were seen adorning dresses with a shorter hemline. Highlighting legs and arms is always a good trick to keep a nice silhouette when a lady is to have a big bump, founder of maternity brand Seraphine, Cecile Reinaud says. This round can be a draw as both the ladies went down a similar path with their maternity attires.
● Casual Looks
Instead of adopting a more traditional approach with nude and simple patterned dresses like Kate Middleton, Meghan opts for more contemporary and chic looks which shows her upbringing in the west. Always having cutting edge dresses Meghan, a trendsetter with her modern and professional vibes in her clothing choices in no doubt a better dresser at casual occasions.
● Public Appearance
In general, Middleton’s approach is one of simple elegance as she mostly is seen in her full-length gowns that aren’t over the top and yet looks perfect for a Duchess. Meghan who has enough of experience in dressing for public appearance well before her royal marriage disappoints us in this category as there is nothing groundbreaking in her approach and many times her choices like a bright yellow shift dress and black culottes fetched lots of hate from the fashion police.
● Red Carpet
A former Hollywood star that is known to make heads turn long before her royal marriage, Meghan is a persona that doesn’t need help in this game. She is known to always have something inside her bag. On the other hand the Duchess of Cambridge usually opts for silhouettes that are conservative yet contemporary, often striking that perfect balance between adhering to strict fashion codes and not disappointing us either.
● Royalty Protocols
This is hands down an arena where Meghan remains unsurpassable. Since her marriage, there has been wide coverage with her breaking the royal protocols by wearing black coloured nail paint as opposed to nude colours which are generally adopted by the Queen or the Duchess, or the way she carried her Strathberry bag in a cross body style. (Totally practical even for a dutchess). Kate, on the other hand, is an ideal dutchess with not even a strand of hair out its place and dress accordingly to the royal etiquettes, come rain or thunder.
Though they each have their own individual take in the world of fashion and faddism, both Kate and Meghan prove you don’t have to be born into royalty to carry the baton of magnificent flair and vivacity.
