The 20th edition of International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards ended with a bang last night with some of the top Bollywood celebrities looking as stunning as ever. But wait… what is Deepika Padukone wearing? Not to rain on anybody’s parade but why is the outfit so goddamn extra? Doubtlessly, Deepika can look fabulous in anything, but shouldn’t there be a limit to occasion-appropriate dressing?
The 33-year old actress chose a custom-made, lavender Gaurav Gupta gown that sparkled till the very edge. However, there are quite a few things about the outfit that irked us.
First things first, Deepika Padukone and her stylist Shaleena Nathani have some crazy obsession with over-styling. For Cannes, the neon green Giambattista Valli outfit didn’t need the head wrap. For airport looks, you don’t need to channel your inner supermodel in head-to-toe designer labels. It seems like the two cannot figure out on how to tone the eff down. The same goes for last night’s outfit. Overall, the gown is one stunning piece, the color scheme is rightly vogue, but the exaggerated feather sleeves, the veil-cum-cape and the chandelier earrings.. Was that necessary? Does Deepika really need this much of ornamentation? The woman herself is one beautiful canvas who can rock the simplest of outfits.
Her outfit seems like a mixture of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kylie Jenner and Priyanka Chopra’s red carpet looks.
Let us get straight to the point: Deepika is a QUEEN. She has the body of a Victoria’s Secret model, and is tall, toned, and everything we’ve ever wanted from our bodies. She can effortlessly pull off what we cannot even dream of wearing in reality. We want to see an explosion of that and not this mismatch of 25 things that they couldn’t find a place for.
Netizans seem to be equally disappointed about the actress’ last night look. Unimpressed people on Twitter posted: “Deepika in Met Gala – I will wear the most boring piece of shit. Deepika in IIFA – My Met Gala dress order just arrived” while another user added: “Deepika got confused between IIFA and Met Gala.”
On the other hand, her husband Ranveer Singh looked like a modern Allauddin Khliji in a pre-fall tailored Moschino suit complete with a giant splash of blood of his slain enemies across his chest. With that, he even pulled out a tiny choti and a walking stick, because why not?
All in all, yes we were expecting more.
