Celebrities go to incredible lengths either to slow down the aging process or maintain their glowing complexions. While most of us turn to drugstore products for our skincare needs, stars have an arsenal of (often wacky) beauty treatments and products to keep their skin woes to a minimum.
We’ve broken down 10 of the weirdest celebrity beauty secrets from expensive and painful to simple and DIY. Maybe, just maybe, if you’re adventurous enough to try one of these bizarre treatments, you’ll end up with paparazzi-worthy skin.
Kim Kardashian’s Vampire Facial
It’s not easy being Kim Kardashian. She has to spend so much time, money and sometimes, pain on maintaining her highly photographed face. Kim is famous for trying out weird beauty products, this includes the Instagram famous “vampire facial”. Vampire facial has made headlines for both its rejuvenating skin benefits — a combo of microdermabrasion which is followed by a mask of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) helps boost your skin’s cell turnover — and its potential for scary-cool Instagrams selfies.
Here’s how it works basically: A doctor will draw blood from you, spin it in a centrifuge to extract the PRP, and then inject or apply it topically. The treatment “is being used to improve skin tone and texture, smooth fine lines, and even promote hair growth,” Joshua Zeichner, director of clinical and cosmetic research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City previously told a magazine.
Hailey Baldwin’s Blood Infused Moisturizer
Hailey Baldwin uses a facial lotion that is concocted by Dr. Barbara Sturm, a leader in molecular cosmetics. Hailey’s blood is extracted from her arm and then put in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and white blood cells, which are then added to a cream that is called MC1 Blood Moisturizer. Dr. Sturm suggests that our own platelets can fight off signs of aging by reprogramming our skin. As if the blood part wasn’t enough, at over $1,000 a pop, your bank account will be drained pretty quickly too.
Victoria Beckham’s Bird Poo Facial
A bird poo may not be the first thing you think to slather on your face for glowing skin. Well, there are plenty of stars including Victoria Beckham, out there believe bird droppings are the anti-aging answer. Nightingale facials use sanitized, dehydrated nightingale bird poo that is ground into a fine powder and mixed with water to form a paste that is then applied to the skin. Bird poop is said to be high in urea, which locks in moisture and guanine, which can apparently have a brightening effect.
Sandra Bullock’s Hemorrhoid Cream Eye Treatment
Sandra’s little beauty secret involves hemorrhoid cream. That’s right, she dabs Preparation H under her eyes to reduce the appearance of lines and puffiness. We’d rather not put this stuff on our bottoms, let alone under our eyes! Do not try this at home folks.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s Bee Sting Facial
It appears that Gwyneth Paltrow believes that if there is no pain, there is no gain – at least when it comes to her beauty routine. In 2016, the actress disclosed that she uses an ancient health treatment in which she is voluntarily stung by bees. The actress said that the effect on her was “pretty incredible”, but admitted: “Man, it’s painful.”
Paltrow claimed that the treatment had been around for thousands of years, but has fallen out of fashion in recent times.
Katie Holme’s Snail Slime Skin Care
The French eat snails, Katie Holme’s smear it on her skin. The actress discovered that snail slime skin care products smooth and regenerate damaged tissue leaving her with soft, glowing skin. Because snail slime has a mix of glycolic acid, elastin and protein, these strange products are slithering their way to celeb popularity.
Demi Moore’s Blood-Sucking Leech Therapy
Demi has been to the extreme when it comes to her looks. She once went to Europe specifically to experience the detoxifying benefits of leech therapy (yes, as in those slimy blood-sucking things that most of us hope never to see!). The leeches suck blood from your skin while releasing enzymes that (apparently) remove toxins from your blood.
Jennifer Lopez’s Placenta Facial
J.Lo is desperate to slow the process of aging and what better way than with human placenta facials!? She swears by the expensive placenta collagen masks reporting that they rejuvenate her skin and keep her looking fresh and youthful. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t look her age.
Selena Gomez’s Sweat Bed
Selena loves getting wrapped up like a burrito and laying in a sweat bed for 45 minutes to rid her body of toxins. FAR infrared energy warms the core body temperature to encourage perspiration, which improves the tone, texture and overall appearance of the skin. These sweat lodges also claim to help firm and slim the body and promote sleep.
Jessica Biel’s Lace Sheet Mask
Sheet masks are so popular these days and stars are really helping boost the trend by relentlessly posting sheet mask-selfies on social media. Jessica Biel once posted a pic of herself with what looked like a doily on her face, but it was just Dermovia’s Lace Your Face Hydrating Rose Water sheet mask. This lacy looking sheet mask is said to open pores, infuse the skin with nutrient-rich ingredients and then seal the skin so all the goodness is retained.
We are very happy with our ordinary sheet masks, thank you very much.
