After ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ opened to the jubilation of many pandemic-stricken fans worldwide, there was already news of the third movie going around. Now, interviews indicate that the third instalment of the blockbuster series will leave Diana’s past behind to explore new avenues.
Wonder Woman fans have a lot to be excited about. The film series, which started in 2017, has become an international sensation and one of the only noteworthy achievements from the DCEU. While there is talk about the third film in the series bringing it to a close, the news about the movie has kept fans’ hopes up. What is happening with ‘Wonder Woman 3’?
- Wonder Woman up till now
- A new horizon?
- What will be the new story?
Wonder Woman Now
‘Wonder Woman’ was released with much fanfare in 2017. But the young Gal Gadot had been introduced as Diana Prince in ‘Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice’. The sequence where she battles doomsday has become iconic.
The first movie dealt with her origin story and her long-running relationship with Steve Trevor. As she battled in the front of World War 1, she became disillusioned with the modern world, which seemed to focus more on war than peace. She retired and lived while doing work in a museum to help restore historical pieces.
This is where ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ picked her up. She battled her nemesis from the comics Cheetah and grew more comfortable with her legacy. As a demigod and one of the most influential people on the planet, she battled with human treachery and innovation while understanding that the world had fundamentally changed.
The Snyder Cut, which was released on HBO Max, also had a meaty Diana storyline. As she dealt with losing her people from Amazon, she suited up to battle Darkseid’s forces on Earth. And now, Patty Jenkins is picking up the strings again and has given some insight into ‘Wonder Woman 3’ details.
A New Horizon
The first two instalments of the series have dealt with Diana’s past, ‘Wonder Woman 3’ is all set to change that. In an interview, Patty Jenkins said, “I’m not pining to put it in the past again because where are you going to go? I think it would be weird. You have to go forward. It’s a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. And so where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t nailed down”.
As far as ‘Wonder Woman 3’ details go, this is the most significant piece. Now that she has settled the story of Diana’s past, ‘Wonder Woman 3’ is Patty Jenkin approaching the modern world with Wonder Woman by her side.
Warner Brothers gave the script a go-ahead last December, but the pandemic has delayed the process somewhat. With the ongoing stress of the pandemic and multiple projects on her plate, fans might have to wait for a longer time to see Diana Prince on the silver screen again. With WB moving on, Jenkins has put the script-writing on hold. Also, as restrictions lift across countries, fans will probably be able to see ‘Wonder Woman 3’ in theatres once it is released.
However, there is still the question of the story, and here the comics come into play.
Though Wonder Woman has dealt with many historical threats in the comics, recent iterations have faced the real world. In the “Rebirth” line of reboots, Greg Rucka penned a series with two parallel storylines, one exploring Diana’s past in Themyscira and one where she journeyed in Africa to rescue Cheetah from the clutches of a vengeful God.
With the character already being in the films, Jenkins might derive some ideas from that storyline to guide Diana towards her next adventure. Another thing that hasn’t been explored in the movies is Greek mythology. While Ares is mentioned abundantly in the first movie, and he plays a part in the climax, the politics of the Greek pantheon has been under tight wraps.
Gail Simone wrote one of the most celebrated runs of ‘Wonder Woman’ based on Diana in modern life while exploring mythology.
The comic series saw her fighting against Medusa, Ares’ sons and more. Thematically, this would be the “nice closure” Gal Gadot is looking for. The story could deal with Greek Gods finally bringing her into the pantheon to leave Wonder Woman’s legacy to be someone else. However, fans will have to wait till ‘Wonder Woman 3’ details are confirmed.
Diana Prince wants the third movie to be “a nice closure”. Patty Jenkins seems to agree, with work going on to create a contemporary story set in the modern world. While WB has managed to keep ‘Wonder Woman 3’ details under tight wraps, fans can expect a modern twist in the tale of the Amazonian princess going forward.
