‘Sex and the City’: It’s a woman’s world all the way!
Based on Candace Bushnell’s novel of the same name, the series followed Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her 3 best friends, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) who lived in New York and were inseparable, often confiding in each other about their sex lives, relationships, and workplace problems. Carrie wrote a column called “Sex and the City” and shared a very open-minded approach to all things sex with her friends. Over the seasons, the four women dated a variety of men and faced a variety of trouble with each of them.

The show is light-hearted, chic, and feel-good, and remains one of the highest-rated comedies every developed for HBO. It addressed the issues of safe sex and femininity in a manner that had never been seen on television before. The show became a fashion catalogue for young women at the time due to the designer outfits its four leading ladies wore. The show still has a massive fan following worldwide which is why HBO Max has finally given a go to season 7 of ‘Sex and the City’.
Season 7: The long-awaited revival
17 years after its final episode aired, HBO Max is all set to bring the show back in the format of a limited series. There were initially rumours that the team was working on a third movie continuing the franchise, however, in an official statement released by the streaming platform, it has been confirmed that the series is happening and might release by the end of 2021 or in 2022.
Even though there is no official statement on what the plot of the mini-series will be, in an interview given by Sarah Jessica Parker 3 years ago, she revealed that she would like to see what happens to the characters in a post #MeToo world and an era where sexual politics is a subject discussed actively. Parker also said in 2019,
“I think to do some episodes of ‘Sex and the City’ — I wouldn’t call it a reboot. I would call it a ‘revisit’”.
However, even though fans are super excited to see the amazing ladies of ‘Sex and the City’ return, they will have to do without their very own Samantha Jones, portrayed by Cattrall.
Kim Cattrall will be skipping this one!
In the past couple of years, Cattrall has repeatedly said that she has no intention of being a part of the series again and that she has done all that she could for the character of Samantha. In a 2017 interview with Piers Morgan, she revealed that she has received a lot of backlash for not wanting to continue with the role, saying,
“It’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no,’ that I’m demanding or a diva. And this is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City, and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker, in that I think she could have been nicer”. She also revealed that it is time that someone else took on the role, “It’s a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it. And another actress should play it. Maybe they could make it an African-American Samantha Jones, or a Hispanic Samantha Jones”.
