Why did Mel leave Los Angeles?
Mel is a widower who loses her ER doctor husband in a car accident during a rainstorm. Months later, she decides to get past the pain of losing her husband. She moves from Los Angeles after she applies for an ad hiring for the position of a nurse practitioner in Virgin River, a remote California town.
With the job came a picture-perfect cabin that had been promised in the ad. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for the fresh start she had been envisioning. Unfortunately, the cabin was full of dirt and nothing like in the pictures. Adding more to her misery was when she confessed to the old man that helped her reach the cabin that she is here to help a man named Doc Mullins in his seventies who is apparently unable to handle his practice alone anymore. She soon learns the man that helped her is Doc Mullins himself.
Despite being disheartened by her situation, Mel searches to get herself a warm meal. She lands at the only place in Virgin River where you can get a meal, Jack’s bar, where she meets the owner Jack Sheridan. She tells him how she’s stuck here as she has sold her old house and quit her previous job against her sister Joey’s advice.
In the beginning, Doc Mullins also refuses to let Mel work at his office. But after his confrontation with Mayor McCrea, he agrees to give her a 30-day trial run. Till then she decides to move into the local bed and breakfast while Jack fixes the cabin.
Does Mel have feelings for Jack?
The good looking former marine Jack was smitten the minute Mel walked into his bar. Jack, in Season 1 of ‘Virgin River’, proved to be the perfect companion to Mel who is clearly dealing with a lot. He is always there for Mel, whether it is to fix her cabin or take care of her during the death anniversary of her husband.
Things take a turn when Mel dreams about her husband’s death, except it isn’t the face of her husband. It is Jack’s face. Mel confesses to having feelings for Jack to her sister Joey. But she further tells her how she has not moved on from her husband’s death and is not ready to get close to anyone. Jack and Mel’s budding romance is interrupted by Jack’s ex-girlfriend Charmaine who, through a letter, discloses to him about her pregnancy.
