Castle season 8 wraps up on a sour note off-screen
Castle season 8 wrapped up with a major twist. When fans thought Castle and Beckett had met their end, the series rolled on seven years ahead showing the duo married three kids. Then came another twist. Stana Katic wasn’t even approached to re-up her contract for Castle season 9. Confirming reports of her exit, Katic told Deadline,
“Rather than distracting from what was an amazing experience, I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much-beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”
Budgetary issues on ABC’s part were cited as the reason behind Katic’s exit, but rumours suggest otherwise. The growing tension between Fillion and Katic is what stirred trouble on set. According to sources close to People, “The two were basically not speaking to each other if it wasn’t in character”.
Talking about her unceremonious firing by ABC, Katic admitted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “I’m actually still not clear on the thought process behind the way that it went down. It hurt and it was a harsh ending.”
She also told Daily Mail, “I was confused by the entire experience. I was hurt”.
Although Castle Season 8 ended on a perfectly sweet note, things didn’t go quite well for Katic. Making things worse, her co-star Nathan Fillion was approached for a contract renewal for season 9.
Castle season 9 is a mystery for all to solve
Castle season 9 was definitely on the cards, but plans turned upside down when ABC Studios decided to fire StanaKatic. Disappointed fans did not want to see Castle without their beloved Beckett. Although the show was named Castle, Kate Beckett’s character grew equally popular and central to the story’s theme.
Even before Katic’s controversial exit, the producers had been planning on opening season 9 with a clean slate. That is essentially why season 8 came to an end after tying up all the loose ends of the LokSat mystery. Co-showrunner Alexi Hawley told Entertainment Weekly, “Our plan from the beginning was to wrap up the loose threads because driving into season 9, which we’re very hopeful that we’ll have, we wanted to come in with a clean slate and be able to tell new stories and not owe anything back.”
According to Deadline, ABC is planning on bringing back Castle with a short season 9 of only 13 episodes. But the fate of the series is still hanging by a thread as the show did not feature among the 15 that ABC recently renewed.
Talking about the show’s uncertain future with TVLine, Hawley said, “There’s stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won’t come back in the same form next season – although again, we really hope that it does.”
Castle season 9 not on the cards for StanaKavic
Whether Castle season 9 happens or not, what’s certain is that there wont be a StanaKaticplaying Detective Kate Beckett. In a statement to Deadline, ABC confirmed,
“Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series ‘Castle’ foreight years. We are grateful for StanaKatic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship.”
Katic also tweeted a final goodbye to all her fans and cast and crew members, thanking them for supporting her for eight long years. Back in 2016, Nathan Fillion closed a deal to return for the potential season 9. So, if a renewal is to happen, season 9 will be seen without Beckett.
A castle without Stana Katic is horrifyingly difficult to imagine. There is speculation of starting afresh with a brand-new cast. Given the crisis that the entertainment industry is facing right now, there are also chances that the show might never come back. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the showrunners to disclose any further developments on the new season.
