Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the perfect lockdown binge
Let’s be real, 2020 is not really the year of our dreams. With the pandemic around and people locked in their homes in a constant state of fear, a toll has imprinted itself on our mental health. Breaking away from this constant state of uncertainty and anxiety is the goal, and what better way to do that than binge-watching our cares away. Netflix original Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the perfect show for the job not only because it has a premise background that resonates with our current situation, but also because it is filled with positivity and all the goodness of a comedy.

Brought to us by the impeccable sense of humour of Tina Fey in collaboration with Robert Carlock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows around Kimmy Schmidt and her unbreakable spirit in New York City. Kimmy along with other Durnsville women have lived in an underground bunker thinking of the planet to have for 15 years, after being kidnapped by the leader of a cult. After being rescued, Kimmy decides to stay back in New York and build herself a new life, unlike her fellow hostages. However, her underdeveloped life and social skills make it hard for her to find her way in the city.
Our situation as captives in our homes is no less anxious than Kimmy’s, although Kimmy has seen some dark times. However, Kimmy’s struggle during and after her years as a captive is a lesson in positivity. The dank sense of humour that Fey presents in the show is bound to lift the spirits up of the audience and that is exactly why no other year deserves a reboot of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt more than 2020. Kimmy’s upbeat outlook at life and its hurdles, her claustrophobia and loneliness break the wall between the real and the reel.
Which Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Character Are You? (Quiz)
Netflix’s interactive special of the show
Fans were bummed out when the show ended in January last year. Fortunately, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt soon received an interactive movie reboot, which released in May 2020. The reboot, Kimmy vs. the Reverend, was made in an interactive format that Netflix had previously experimented with in Bandersnatch, which became a global sensation overnight. In a similar pattern, the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt reboot was an interactive special where the audience made crucial choices for Kimmy leading to the multiple outcomes designed by an algorithm path.
The main premise for Kimmy vs. the Reverend follows around Kimmy while she prepares for her wedding, which becomes the least of her priorities once she discovers that there might be more women like her trapped in other underground bunkers of Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne. Speaking of the premise, Tina Fey told “Variety”,
“We wanted something movie-scale and movie-level stakes. And that felt high stakes for Kimmy: She would want to take action if she discovered that.”
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the ultimate source of positivity
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been a motivation for fans in the past and still continues to remain so. Kimmy’s forever-positive attitude is exactly what people need right now to get through the mess that 2020 has created. A “Reddit” user wrote,
“I find a deep connection with Kimmy’s character, anyone else?” Another fan spoke about how the show had helped her cope with life’s struggles. She said, “I am celebrating 5 years out of an abusive relationship. Every day that I had to go to court, I thought of Kimmy’s philosophy of getting through moments 10 seconds at a time. I’m honestly not sure if I would be here if I didn’t have this show.”
There, we said it! There should be no end to Kimmy’s resilience, kindness, and optimism. Do you want to see another reboot of the show? Let us know in the comments below!
