‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ came to a close last year without a season 5 on the cards. Netflix released an interactive special shortly after, but fans refuse to accept Kimmy’s departure from their lives.
Netflix’s original comedy ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ raised a roar among the audience with its refreshing content and positive philosophy. News of the show’s end cast a lull over the spirit of the audience and although the creators promised to dedicate a film to the show, it doesn’t seem to be enough. It is, however, pointless to cry over the never happening season 5 of ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ because Kimmy’s story is over!
- ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ ended ahead of season 5
- ‘Kimmy vs. the Reverend’ was Fey’s gift to the fans
- Fans want a spin-off of ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’
‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ ended ahead of season 5
Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ is a hearty comedy-drama of Netflix that completed its run last year. The show followed the character from the title, Kimmy Schmidt, who finds herself living in an underground bunker with three other women after being abducted by a cult leader, Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne. Soon, Kimmy and her fellow hostages are rescued by a SWAT team, and thus begins Kimmy’s journey in the strange new world of New York. Although the other “mole women” return to Durnsville, Kimmy decides to stay back in New York making a life of her own. It’s not long before Kimmy learns the harsh ways of the world. Nevertheless, despite her struggles, which get enhanced given her poor social and life skills, Kimmy approaches her newfound life and liberty with the utmost optimism.
‘Unbreakable Kimmy Show’ closed its quarters to the Netflix audience ahead of season 5, and the creators have provided a plausible reason behind that.
Nonetheless, season 4 of the show was its last, but not without its surprises. Not long after season 4A went on air, the creators brought out a surprising second part of the season. Robert Carlock provided some insight into the decision to end ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ before it could head over to season 5. He said, “We came into the season not necessarily thinking that way. But in the past few months, we’ve been thinking [the series] is heading toward its conclusion. We were never quite sure what the life of the show wanted to be. When we split up this fourth season into kind of a fourth and a fifth … so it just felt like the right time to pull up stakes since we were kind of pushing ourselves into next year”.

‘Kimmy vs. the Reverend’ was Fey’s gift to the fans
Although season 5 of ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ never saw the light of the day, the creators did make up for the loss of it. No doubt, plans for converting the Netflix original into a film were always on the cards, but little did we know how soon it was going to happen. Soon after the Netflix series came to an end, the creators announced the launch of an interactive movie special of the show on Netflix. The interactive special was designed in a format similar to the likes of ‘Bandersnatch‘, where the viewers made the most crucial choices for Kimmy and the outcome varied according to the choices made.
The interactive special, ‘Kimmy vs. the Reverend’ had the viewers follow around Kimmy while she planned her wedding. However, that ends up being Kimmy’s second priority when she becomes preoccupied with the suspicion that Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne has more women trapped in other underground bunkers.
Tina Fey had promised ahead of the film that it would be fun, and boy was it fun!
Fans want a spin-off of ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’
It’s true that ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ isn’t coming back with season 5, but fans know more than to stop pursuing dreams of a spin-off. Ever since it was announced that season 4 would be the show’s last, fans have speculated and demanded a spin-off, especially on Titus. When Tina Fey was approached with the suggestion of a Titus spin-off, she approved the idea without a second thought.
In fact, Tina Fey has confirmed that any excuse would work for her to go back to working with the cast of ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’. She said,
“These are the people we’ve been working with for 12 years on and off, so the idea of any excuse to reunite, we’re more than happy to do it, and we definitely feel like these characters are fertile enough to revisit”.
