This is the greatest battle between two of the most “not-superhero-like” superhero shows i.e. ‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Doom Patrol’. Guess who’s the winner?
‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Doom Patrol’ are both unconventional superhero shows in which the characters are spearheaded by enigmatic old men who conduct experiments on team members. However, their approaches are vastly disparate, resulting in one ultimate winner. Given the amount of superhero series cropping up these days, there’s always an ongoing debate to decide which series deserve the top spot. Though both ‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Doom Patrol’ are undeniably weird, the former has been able to bag people’s support. And here’s why.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Doom Patrol’ fought against each other for their fans. Guess who won?
Which superhero show is better: ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Or ‘Doom Patrol’?
It’s funny how much in common both the series have (even the release dates!). And yet, it’s quite easy to compare the Hargreeves family and DC’s unsung heroes. ‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Doom Patrol’ both premiered on February 15, 2019, the former on Netflix and the latter on DC Universe and HBO Max. ‘The Umbrella Academy’ is based on a comic book series written by Gerard Way. The series features a dysfunctional family of heroes i.e. Luther, Vanya, Diego, Allison, Five, Klaus, and Ben, who are trained to work together to stop apocalypses and survive against impossible odds even though they hardly get along.
On the contrary, ‘Doom Patrol’ features a team of superheroes i.e. Robotman, Crazy Jane, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman, and Cyborg, who got their superhuman abilities from the traumas of their past. This team comes together to fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. But, ultimately, the top spot was bagged by ‘The Umbrella Academy’ which relies on its powers, unlike the other team. ‘Doom Patrol’ is an impulsive and unreliable battle group because some of its powers have a mind of their own. Not to forget, Five and Vanya have powers superior to any of the ‘Doom Patrol’s’ characters. Even Dorothy can’t stop travel and pure destructive power.
While ‘The Umbrella Academy’ feels like a show about family wrapped up in a superhero saga, ‘Doom Patrol’ is more of a superhero cliché wrapped up in a genre-defying facade.
Also, the former adheres to the TV-14 rating while the latter is not suitable for children.
Here’s what Tomatometer has to say!
Rotten Tomatoes and the Tomatometer score are globally trusted recommendation sources for entertainment. The average Tomatometer score for ‘Doom Patrol’ is 96% while the meter reads 82% for ‘The Umbrella Academy’. However, the average audience score screams quite the opposite – 74% for ‘Doom Patrol’ and 87% for Sir Reginald Hargreeves’ s team.
The Tylt had also created an online poll to let people decide which series is better. The result? #TeamUmbrellaAcademy ousted #TeamDoom Patrol with a 70.3% score to the latter’s 29.7%. View the score.

‘Doom Patrol’ lost against ‘The Umbrella Academy’ – Here’s how.
Who is the winner of the ultimate battle?
Indisputably, the winner is ‘The Umbrella Academy’ because its characters are people before they are heroes. They are strong and weak, regretful and motivated – all at the same time. Thus, the series strays from trite tendencies. On the other hand, ‘Doom Patrol’ strictly adheres to the comic books that often make the dialogues unnatural.
While ‘The Umbrella Academy’ explores mature themes in a darkly comical fashion, ‘Doom Patrol’ tries too hard with its language, nudity, and situational commentary.
If you want to watch a sombre superhero saga, go for ‘The Umbrella Academy’, and if you want to watch a superhero cliché, go for ‘Doom Patrol’. If you have been dying for superhero shows with a surreal slant, dive into both!
