Fans have been obsessed with ‘The Umbrella Academy’ ever since Netflix brought it on the platform. One of the questions about the show that is eating the fans away seems to surround the age of Number Five. Why doesn’t the 58-year-old age more than 13? Let’s find out!
Number Five resumed his role on ‘The Umbrella Academy’ as the show returned for its second season on Netflix recently. Portrayed by Aidan Gallagher, Number Five is one of the Hargreeves siblings, hell-bent on saving the world from apocalypses. The peculiar thing about Number Five as a character, though, is that he is a 58-year-old man trapped in his 13-year-old body which doesn’t seem to age.
So, here we are to debunk the mystery behind Number Five’s never-ending youth.

The background story of Number Five
The fifth episode of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 1 provided a background story for Number Five. Number Five, aka The Boy, is the time-travelling superhero of ‘The Umbrella Academy‘, and one of the adopted Hargreeves siblings. Five, the twin brother of Luther, can travel through time, but only into the future, and not backward. Besides his ability to travel in time, he also has the power to “micro-jump” which enables him to move very quickly, almost like the Flash.
Five is stuck 50 years into the future when he attempts to time travel as a teenage boy. For decades, he finds himself stranded on the planet that has turned into a wasteland in the aftermath of the apocalypse. Five survives on bits and pieces of whatever odd things he could find, like cockroaches, and saves his mind by forming a relationship with a mannequin. During his time in the future, Five ages like he should, and there comes a time when we see him as a grizzly bearded, wise old man. In due course, a shady organisation called the “Temps Aeternalis” helps The Boy return to his family so that the Hargreeves could be warned about the apocalypse in the future.
Once back, Five takes the body of his 13-year-old self, when he is really over 50-years-old.

Why doesn’t Number Five age?
When Number Five-time travelled fifty years ahead into the future, he was only 13-years-old. Stranded in a post-apocalyptic world, Five continued to age normally, but when he returned years later, he was back in the body of his 13-year-old self. On being questioned by his siblings, Five revealed that he was stranded for approximately 45 years in the future. This goes on to say that although he had his 13-year-old body back, it does not take away the aging process he had gone through in the future. So, if Five’s, and our, calculations are correct, he should be about 58-years-old. Steve Blackman, the show-runner of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ confirmed Number Five’s age in an interview with “Entertainment Weekly”. He said, “[Aidan Gallagher] had a little bit of this brooding sullenness which he needed to do, but he also could bring the complexity of being a 58-year-old man in a 13-year-old’s body”.
The biggest question, however, is why didn’t Five’s body age on returning, although his mind retained the age he accumulated in the future years. The answer is in the question itself. What we have learned so far from the overflowing time travel content that was presented on our screens is that time travel is complicated. It comes with inexplicable side effects, and Five’s 58-year-old self-trapped in his 13-year-old body is simply the result of time travelling.
What does Aidan Gallagher have to say?
Aidan Gallagher, who plays Number Five in ‘The Umbrella Academy’, stated that he doesn’t focus on the dichotomy his character’s age when he slips into the role. Playing a 58-year-old in the body of a 13-year-old is understandably tougher than it seems. According to Gallagher, the actor primarily focuses on the mental state of Five and his reaction to certain things in order to nail the character’s interactions with the other siblings.
Gallagher said, “Five has sort of had his own little life aside from everyone. He spent 45 years in the apocalypse, and that took a toll on him and was a big part of his overall trauma … That’s one of the things that separate him and the family apart, because of how much he knows, and how much they’re oblivious to … He’s more worried about the incoming apocalypse, and he has no clue as to what caused it.”
