Why the renewal seems like an obvious decision for the creators?
‘The Sinner’ series gained such immense popularity that the first season was nominated for best series at the Golden Globes, while Jessica earned a Golden Globe nomination for best actress and bagged an Emmy. Not just her, season 2 star Carrie Coon was also nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for her role as Vera Walker.
What do the showrunners plan to do with season 4?
Fans are aware that the anthology series features new actors in the major roles every season, though Detective Harry Ambrose, played by Bill Pullman, is a show regular.
Revealing the reason behind the success of ‘The Sinner’s’ storytelling, USA Network President Chris McCumber said, “‘The Sinner’ has struck a chord with audiences with its signature ‘whydunnit’ style”.
He even teased fans with the plot of the upcoming season in the same interview and said, “In season 4, we’re excited to dig even deeper into the psyche of Bill Pullman’s beloved Detective Ambrose character, while introducing our audience to a compelling, completely new mystery”.

Even though the details of what will follow in the season 4 of the series are not out yet, one can expect to see the detective deal with the trauma of others, while also wrestling with his own demons.
When will season 4 air?
‘The Sinner’ Seasons 1 and 2 aired in August 2017 and 2018 respectively in the US. While the third season premiered in the US on February 6, 2020, and arrived on Netflix five months later.
With the current health crisis that has crippled the production houses since months, it’s hard to estimate when ‘The Sinner’ Season 4 will air. But once production of the series resumes, we can expect ‘The Sinner’ Season 4 to drop sometime next year on USA Network.
Cast of the season 4
The show portrays standalone tales in each episode with only Detective Harry Ambrose as the constantly returning lead protagonist. Therefore, it is hard to estimate which actors will be roped in to play central characters in season 4. But rest assured Bill Pullman will be returning to play Harry Ambrose in the next season. As for other characters, expect a new cast line-up.
What sets ‘The Sinner’ apart?
In case you need a quick refresher of what has happened so far, Season 1 was all about Biel’s Cora Tannetti, digging into her backstory to figure out what led her to stab a man to death.
Season 2 revolved around the story of 13-year-old Julian Walker, who apparently murdered his parents in a motel room. While the latest, season 3 starts as a tragic car accident but soon develops into something more complex and sinister. In fact, the case that at first seemed ordinary and routine turns out to be Detective Harry Ambrose’s career’s most dangerous case and inflicts major trauma on him.
Viewers and critics agree that Derek Simonds’s brilliantly crafted mystery drama series boasts a “whydunit” style instead of the clichéd “whodunit” and it is one of the major reason why it’s so immensely popular today. The treatment of the plot in a “whydunnit” fashion also comes off as engaging and different from the “whodunit” one which is seen in most of the crime-themed television series since the beginning of time.
What’s also different about the show is that it follows an anthological narrative style which basically means that each season of the show revolves around a single case, or story, with Detective Harry Ambrose as the lead protagonist and a common thread.
