The show has aired three seasons so far and plans to release the fourth this fall. Fans are still confused and mostly disappointed in Netflix’s decision to end the show after only 2 years of airing.
It sure feels as if the show came out only yesterday but Netflix’s ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ actually came out in 2018. The show was created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and produced by Warner Bros. for Netflix. It would come as a surprise to the show’s fans but ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ was based on the Archie comic book series with the same name.

The show was also supposed to blend in along with sister show ‘Riverdale’ as they are both set in the same world according to Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Alas, Netflix announced their decision to cancel this show in July this year 2020. Read further to know the facts behind Netflix’s decision to cancel ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’.
What was ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ about?
Based on Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Archie comic book series, ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ was a supernatural, witchy, horror TV series originally planned to go along with ‘Riverdale’ as its sister series and use its popularity to slingshot the show into the mainstream. The first season of the series got tons of fan praise and critical praise, especially for Kiernan Shipka (who plays Sabrina in the show) for her impressive acting skills.
The show is based upon the struggles of Sabrina Spellman, a teenage witch living in a coven. Upon hearing the announcement of the cancellation of the show, Roberto said, “Working on ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ has been an incredible honour from day one.
The cast, beginning with Kiernan Shipka as everyone’s favourite teen-witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show. I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can’t wait for everyone to see part four”.

How did the show end?
The show was just about to commence its collaboration with the sister show ‘Riverdale’ before the news of its cancellation was announced. It would have been called “Witch War” as announced by Roberto in a tweet. Fans can be assured that the upcoming fall episodes will not be withdrawn and be aired on Netflix this year.
This is not a first for Archie-verse; just some time ago, another Archie comics-based TV series, and ‘Riverdale’ spin-off ‘Katy Keene’ was cancelled. In season 4, fans will get to see Sabrina dealing with her clone and the arrival of the Eldritch terror, and much more.
Why did Netflix cancel the show?
When it comes to cancelling or renewing shows for its platform, Netflix uses a sophisticated algorithm that factors in various metrics of the show such as viewer count, production costs, viewers per episode, etc.
While the show’s first episode gained much traction in mainstream media and earned impressive ratings, the following seasons did not impress the streaming company’s executives. The show’s declining ratings and fan interest are some of the major reasons Netflix may have pulled the cord on the show.
All may have not been lost, comic series to go on as planned
All is not lost as it is very likely that despite the cancellation of ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ the series will go on in the comic book format as planned and, hopefully, the show may move to another platform altogether. The other Archie show ‘Katy Keene’, the ‘Riverdale’ spinoff, is also in talks to be moved to another platform.
