‘The Office’ is regarded as one of the best comedies in television history, yet it would not be nearly as valuable now without Steve Carell. He recently claimed that he is still obsessed with Michael Scott. Keep reading to know more.
‘The Office’, which aired for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013, is widely regarded as one of the most popular American sitcoms. The mockumentary-style series centered on the daily lives of employees at a paper firm, as all fans know. Dunder Mifflin‘s Regional Manager was played by Carell. Carell played one of the most important roles on ‘The Office’, and his career has never slowed since his departure from the show. After seven seasons, Carell left the show in 2011 but has since worked on a variety of films, including ‘Welcome to Marwen’, ‘The Big Short’, and ‘Foxcatcher’, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. Even though his career has flourished since ‘The Office’, the actor never misses an opportunity to discuss the show.

Michael Scott is a very pure one!!
Though many people, including Paul Rudd and the majority of the cast, were skeptical, Rainn Wilson, the show’s office manager, stated that Carell was always aware that the show was special.
“After we did the pilot, John, Jenna, Steve, and I went down the street in Culver City to have a sandwich, from that shitty little studio we were into that shitty little sandwich shop”, recalled Wilson.
“Steve said, ‘I think this thing could be really special and I bet these are the roles that will define us for the rest of our lives. No matter what we do for the rest of our lives, it’s us will be known.’”
Because he had a deep understanding of Michael’s heart and true intentions, Carell was able to make a character as problematic and offensive as Michael Scott loved by viewers.
While discussing one of the show’s most contentious episodes, “Diversity Day”, in which Michael hijacks professional diversity training at ‘The Office’, Carell and Baumgartner emphasize that despite Michael’s deafening and terrifying moments, he is always there trying to be good.
“That’s why I resist a little when people try to classify Michael as a racist. He is a person with an enormously good, kind heart who lacks a lot of information about the world around him. He slept in a waking world like you could be”, Carell said with a laugh. “[Michael’s] try your best! There is a difference between intolerance and ignorance. Sometimes, of course, intolerance and ignorance go hand in hand. But I think he was a very serious and decent person. He just doesn’t have it … will it all the time, you know?”
Carell essentially said yes when asked if he always seeks the good in the characters he plays. He went on to say that while Michael made one mistake after another, he genuinely cared about people and wanted to see them happy. “[Michael] put his foot in his mouth and said inappropriate things all the time, but I don’t think he ever valued one type of person over another”, said Carell. “And in that regard, he was a very pure one in my opinion Character. He’s very stupid about political correctness and fairness in public. But, at the same time, I don’t think anyone had hardness in their heart.”
Showrunner Greg Daniels and writer Mike Schur, who played Dwight’s cousin Mose Schrute on the show, both agreed with Carell’s assessment of Michael. They, too, cited the character’s intentions as one of its redeeming characteristics.
Steve Carell still misses Michael Scott
Although Steve stated on Twitter in December 2018 that he misses his ‘Office’ co-workers, the actor has stated repeatedly that his decision to leave the show was a positive one. The cast is close-knit and familial, so their friendship is the most memorable aspect of the show. Although he has joked about it being a mistake, the actor truly believed it was time for him to leave ‘The Office’ before he “got too comfortable”.
According to sources, Carell was looking for new creative challenges and explains, “I figured it was time to try something else. You never know what might be on the other side”. Although we would love to see a return of ‘The Office’, Carell has stated that he has no plans to resume his role as Michael Scott.
