With the second part of The Last of Us game out for the public, it has been declared that a television show is in the works based on the game, to be produced by HBO
The ‘Game Of The Year’-winning video game franchise will very soon be adapted for a television series by HBO. The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s 2013 third-person shooter game is set in the post-apocalyptic United States.
- Expectations from the new series
- The same plot as the game, or is there a difference?
- The Last of Us as we know it?
- The ‘when’ and ‘who’ of the series
In the game, an outbreak of a dangerous Cordyceps infection spreads throughout the world, the infection causes the infected to turn into violent man-eating zombies. The game is known for its heart touching story and immersive gameplay.
It received numerous awards for its brilliant storytelling, something for which the game is being called the pioneer. With the second part of the game out for the public, it has been declared that a television show is also in the works, to be produced by HBO.
What can fans of the game expect from the new series?
Since the second part of the game has already hit the shelves earlier this year and no sequel is visible in the near sight, HBO has given the green light to produce the show.
Neil Druckman, the creative director of Naughty Dog, said in an interview with a leading magazine that adapting The Last of Us to the small screen could become a rather interesting challenge for him and his team.
He said, “We have to figure out how it communicates ideas and tells stories” and added,
“In removing the interactivity of a story, how do you make it unique for this other medium? It’s an interesting challenge. I think there’s a lot to learn from it. Craig Mazin has some ideas about how to go about adapting the show, it became intriguing to work with another creative who I admire. It just became a no-brainer, and to do it under the umbrella of HBO and all of their content.”
Neil Druckman will be working on the show alongside Craig Mazin (from Chernobyl, Breaking Bad) and Johan Renck (from Breaking Bad, Chernobyl, The Walking Dead), who will serve as the director of the pilot episode for the HBO series.
What will be the new show’s plot?
Fans of the original game were delighted when HBO announced officially that: “The story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Troy Baker), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.
What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.” This implies that the show will take it from the beginning, cover the events of the first part of the game with the possibility of second part’s content being added later in the show.
It is also rumoured that the show could stretch for a couple seasons and not be a mini-series like Chernobyl.
What is The Last of Us?
After a pandemic of Cordyceps infection destroys the United States, Joel (played by Troy Baker) is a middle-aged, battle-hardened survivor-cum-smuggler partners with Tess to track down Robert, a guy who owed them goods and money. Robert reveals to them that the goods are with the Fireflies, a rebel outfit hostile to the incumbent regime.
They were a group of men and women striving to restore humanity to its past glory. The leader of Fireflies assigns Joel with escorting Ellie, a 14-year-old, to the main Fireflies headquarters.
Later in the story, Joel finds out that Ellie’s DNA is special, in a way that allows her to fight off the Cordyceps infection and that she could be used to create a vaccine and thus reverse the ill fate of humanity.
When will it release? Who will star in it?
No word is out in regards to the release date of The Last of Us, however, Troy Baker (who played Joel) wants Josh Brolin to play the role of Joel.
He says that he met Brolin at an airport and expressed to him how much respect he has for Brolin’s works in movies such as No Country for Old Men. He added if Brolin ever got an offer to play a character named Joel from HBO, he should seriously look into it.
