The King of Queens focused on the arguments and life’s everyday events that couples go through together. The show got a reboot in 2016 in the form of Kevin Can Wait, with Kevin James in the lead. The network’s decision to replace the lead actor caused a lot of controversies and ultimately, its cancellation. Keep reading to find out what The King of Queens reboot is about.
What Kevin Can Wait is about
The creators or the network never officially announced that Kevin Can Wait is an official reboot of the CBS show. But similarities between the two sitcoms, along with the show’s questionable decisions in the second season, have made viewers wonder. The series followed Kevin James in the lead, a recently retired police officer and father of three. He lives in Massapequa, New York with his wife Donna, daughters Kendra and Sara, and son Jack Cole. Kevin dreams of enjoying an early retirement and hanging out with his fellow retired officers. But his small pension has put his relaxation plans on hold indefinitely.
The first season sees Kevin work odd jobs to support his family while they deal with challenges of their own. He meets his friends frequently, but the episodes are mostly focused on Kevin and his wife Donna. Soon, the network was running out of ideas and didn’t know how to keep a second season going. In an attempt to bring back the old 90’s magic of The King of Queens, they recast Donna. The series killed off her character, replacing her with Leah Remini, Kevin’s co-star from The King of Queens. Season 2 saw Kevin’s new profession, his growing relationship with Vanessa (Remini), while living the single-parent life.
The major cast change in The King of Queens reboot led to its cancellation
Kevin Can Wait was exciting before it tried to morph itself into a reboot of the hit 90s sitcom. The plotlines were somewhat distinct too, because instead of playing a delivery man, James plays a retired cop. But the show-runners’ decision to kill off Erin Hayes’ character Donna, did not go down well with fans.
Killing off a lead is intense for a lighthearted sitcom, and bringing in Leah Remini was a questionable move. Fans even accused the series of turning itself into a weekly King of Queens reunion. The characters didn’t even grieve over Donna’s sudden death, and her departure was dealt with in minutes.
In an interview with the New York Post, James went on to say that the reunion felt like old times.
“I felt like it was 10 years earlier; it felt so similar to those days [on The King of Queens]. It’s like we never stopped and just picked up where we left off.”
The reasoning behind the decision to bring in Leah Remini, according to the sitcom’s star James, was surprising to fans. He was pretty straightforward about killing off his TV wife, while confessing to The New York Daily News.
He said, “The plot of the show didn’t have enough drive. If we got through a second season, I wouldn’t see us getting through a third one. We were literally just running out of ideas.”
Will Kevin Can Wait have a third season?
Sorry fans, but this King of Queens reboot will not be getting another season. With Donna’s character being written off and replaced with Remini, the show drew constant comparisons with The King of Queens. The second season received negative ratings, but even then, James’ and Remini’s chemistry was the talk of the town.
Viewers have speculated that the addition of Leah Remini was an attempt to stop the show from being cancelled. It was also suggested that producers were trying to cater to the audience that knew and loved the CBS sitcom. If the show continued to follow the lives of Kevin and Donna, it might’ve been renewed for a third season.
The cancelation news for Kevin Can Wait came from TVLine, and the cast expressed their gratitude on Instagram. Leah Remini posted a picture of her and co-star Kevin James, saying that the show entered her life when she needed a good laugh. The reboot replaced their queen on the show for better ratings, but their move marked the end of the series.
