Sports, relationships, and drama – Welcome to ‘The Game’
Actually a spin-off to the 2000 sitcom ‘Girlfriends’, ‘The Game’ features Tia Mowry as Melanie Barnett, a medical student who gave up her chance of joining the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to move to San Diego, to support her boyfriend, Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall), a professional football player, against the wishes of her parents.

Following the footsteps of its parent series, the show focused on providing quality entertainment for all its viewers and found mainstream success for its creative content.

The reboot helmed by The CW
On December 17, 2019, an article in “Deadline” announced that the series was returning with a reboot written by the original showrunner, Mara and ‘American Soul’ co-creator Devon Greggory. It was being produced by The CW and was slated to have 1-hour long episodes.
According to the executives at the network, the reboot was set in the East Coast and was to have some of the original cast members returning to help a new batch of youngsters navigate the game of football, not just on-field but also off-field.
However, in 2020, The CW decided not to go ahead with developing the reboot. The decision was made based on the pilot script written by Mara and Devon who apparently refused to make the changes the network asked of them in their script. It is being said that both the writers had a clear idea of how they wanted the revival to look and could not come to terms with The CW regarding the same.
Tia Mowry confirmed on a talk show that the reboot wasn’t happening anymore, saying, “And then also we even tried to reboot ‘The Game’ and that’s now not happening. I’m sorry I just think that reboots are just not in my …”
So, what is next in store for ‘The Game’?
August 15th onwards, ‘The Game’ will be available for streaming to everyone in America on Netflix. This is a part of Netflix’s ‘Strong Black Leads’ initiative as the OTT platform is bringing back 7 classic black shows by October 2020.
‘The Game’ is one of the most popular shows ever to have been made in black entertainment history and Netflix is bringing it back so that an entirely new generation of viewers can watch and appreciate this iconic series.
Netflix is no stranger to reviving shows based on the response of viewers to the original series. It did so with ‘Gilmore Girls’ after realizing the popularity of the series and gave it a reboot. So, not all hope is lost. Based on the audience response, Netflix may save the day for ‘The Game’ as well. Also, considering that the pilot script for a reboot is already complete, Mara and Devon may take the script to another network to revive the series.
