Netflix’s reboot of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club‘ is originally based on the bestselling novels by Ann M. Martin who is also the producer. The series was earlier announced in 2018. Finally, on 3rd July 2020, the series was released on Netflix. The book series has been adapted before on screen in the form of a short 90’s series on HBO that grew more popular after it premiered on Nickelodeon and Disney channel. A feature film on the same was also produced in 1995.

The beloved Ann M. Martin’s book series revolves around a group of middle school students who come together to run a babysitting club in a fictional town of Stony Brook, Conn. Every episode focuses on one of the members of the club. It shows how they face every difficulty with a positive outlook and how their friends are there to help them at every step. ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ also promises to tackle bigger issues like racism and divorce. Through its new release, Netflix is hoping to give a fresh outlook to the adventures of the characters of Kristy Thomas, Mary-Ann Spier, Claudia Kishi, Stacey McGill, and Dawn Schafer.

In the 2020 reboot of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’, Kristy Thomas is played by Sophie Grace. She is the headstrong founder and president of the club. The role was earlier played by Avriel Hillman. Mary-Ann Spier, secretary of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’, is played by Malia Baker. The role was earlier taken on by Rachel Leigh Cook. Fans of the original series remember Claudia as the artist of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’. In the 2020 reboot, the role was played by Momona Tamada.
Previously, the club’s vice-president was played by Jeni F. Winslow. The iconic character even inspired a documentary of her own on Netflix, ‘The Claudia Kishi Club’. The brainy treasurer of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’, Stacey McGill is played by Shay Rudolph. The role was earlier played by Jessica Purnell who moves to Stoneybrook from New York City. The last member of the club, Xochitl Gomez, takes on the role of L.A. transplant and impassioned environmentalist Dawn Shafer in ‘The Babysitters Club’ reboot. Previously, the character was played by White women, so casting Dawn gives the reboot an exciting touch.
Apart from the middle schoolers, Alicia Silverstone, who is famously known for her role as Cher in ‘Clueless’ is also part of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’. She plays the role of Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer, Kristy’s mom.

It will continue to revolve around the lives of Kristy Thomas (Sophie Grace), Dawn Schafer (Xochitl Gomez), Jessie Ramsey (Anais Lee), Mary Anne Spier (Malia Baker), Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada), Stacey McGill (Shay Rudolph), and Mallory Pike (Vivian Watson).
What to expect from season 2 of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’?
During the premiere of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’, creator Rachel Shukert announced on Twitter that Jessi Ramsey, a much-loved character from the books, would be a big part of season 2, despite her limited presence in the first season. In an earlier interview with “Variety”, Shukert talked about it.
“Jessi moves in even later. She is a really important character, but she is more of a season 2 character”
Said Shukert.
Later, she also talked with “Vanity Fair” about what can be expected from season 2 of ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ and the storylines she is most looking to feature.
“There is so many. I love how Kristy evolves in her new family. I always have really loved Mary Anne and Dawn — as their parents get closer, how that kind of changes their relationship”.
