The analysis of the characters on TVD, naturally led fans to debate over who is the better man between Damon or Stefan? The debate still rages on and here is why we think Stefan is the better man in ‘The Vampire Diaries’.
It was not so long ago that the hit American TV show – ‘The Vampire Diaries’ – won our hearts with its supernatural plot about vampires in love. The supernatural teen drama is actually based on the book series going by the same name and authored by L. J. Smith. It was later developed into a TV show having 8 seasons and a total of 171 episodes. ‘The Vampire Diaries’ was quick to attract a huge fan base as the main characters of the show (Stefan, Elena, and Damon) began to intrigue the audiences with their love triangle. So, who was the better Salvatore man – Stefan or Damon? Here’s why we are team Stefan all the way.
Highlights —
- Stefan is a secure man and not a control freak unlike Damon
- Stefan refuses to compel people unless it’s absolutely necessary or for their own safety
- Stefan likes to see the best in people.
Stefan is a secure man and not a control freak like Damon.
The Salvatore brothers have had an interesting but rather twisted history with love.
As humans, both fall in love with Katherine Pierce, and as vampires, both of them end up falling for Elena who looks exactly the same as Katherine. But even though the love triangle between Damon, Elena, and Stefan intensifies, Stefan comes out as true boyfriend, always respecting the choices that Elena makes for herself.

In several instances, such as the one where Elena decides to gamble her life and save everyone she cares for by trusting Elijah (one of the original vampires), Stefan chooses to respect the choice Elena has made even though he is aware of the risks involved. Damon, on the other hand, is so insecure that he ends up jeopardising Elena’s life as a human. He is too scared of finding out what he would become if Elena is not around, and this gets highlighted several times throughout the show.
Stefan refuses to compel people unless it is absolutely necessary or for their own safety
Minus the part where Stefan has either been possessed or turned off his humanity, we get to see him stating clearly to Damon that people are not puppets. He also provides Elena with Vervain so that she does not fall victim to Damon’s compulsions. This shows that Stefan is someone who, despite being a vampire, is considerate and humane, qualities that most vampires on the show do not portray. Giving up your girl for your brother and being happy for them is not something everyone is capable of!
Stefan likes to see the best in people
While Damon simply turns Vicky into a vampire for fun and plans to kill her once the fun part is over, Stefan decides to actually help Vicky transition and prevents her from freaking out. He does the same for Caroline (who, by the way, gets pushed around by Damon like a toy), and teaches her self-control, unlike Damon whose first thought is to stake her. So, we know who likes to see the best in people.
These are just a few things about Stefan that really touch the audiences. Now, this does not take away from the fact that as a vampire he has gone on ripper binges. But that he is always trying to be a better person without shrugging away responsibility is quite nice to see. We think he met his match when he married Caroline. In the end, being the better brother, as usual, he gives himself up for Damon and Elena to have a future together.
The ending of the show left everyone teary-eyed but also happy that Stefan finds peace with Lexi. ‘The Vampire Diaries’ continues to have a loyal fan base and that is a part of the reason why the spin-off series – ‘The Originals’ – did so well. The audience hopes to see glimpses of TVD in the ongoing show ‘Legacies’ which revolves around supernaturally gifted children of characters from ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Originals’.
