‘The Umbrella Academy’: A dysfunctional family with superpowers
The fantasy drama begins on October 1st, 1989, with 43 women, around the world, birthing children despite not being pregnant. Seven of these children were adopted by a billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and became a part of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, a group of superheroes. Instead of naming them, their adoptive father numbered them and kept the youngest (Number Seven/Vanya), who didn’t seem to possess any powers, away from the rest of the children. Several years in the future, the siblings have become estranged and find out that their father passed away. Reunited, the siblings now want to find out the truth behind his death, uncovering family secrets along the way.
The series is adorned with an ensemble cast consisting of Ellen Page, David Castañeda, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Cameron Britton, Aidan Gallagher, and Mary J. Blige. It has received high praise for its cinematography, visual effects, and acting performances.
The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, giving the series positive reviews, reads: “The Umbrella Academy unfurls an imaginative yarn with furtive emotion and an exceptionally compelling ensemble, but the series’ dour sensibility often clashes with its splashy genre trappings.”
Season 2: The Hargreeves siblings are superhero squad goals
Referred to as “the new X-Men” by numerous entertainment columns, ‘The Umbrella Academy’ finds its appeal in its unique plot and off-beat character interactions.
The first season focused on the siblings as they came to terms with their father’s death and navigated through their own feelings regarding their respective relationships with him. An important plot point was the revelation of Number Seven’s real powers and the apocalypse she caused.
Season 2 saw the siblings end up in different years of the 1960s as the time travel at the end of season 1 went wrong. The show focused on Umbrella Academy’s fight against the Commission to return to their own time. The season also brought Ben back with a lot more powers as compared to season. Just like its preceding season, the second one received rave reviews from critics as well.
Season 3: Umbrella Academy versus Sparrow Academy
Season 3 of the series will focus on the highly anticipated showdown between the Umbrella Academy and the Sparrow Academy. The second season ended with the introduction of the Sparrow Academy, a group of seven children born on the same day and adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves following a change in the timeline caused by the Umbrella Academy. As indicated in the final scene of season 2, this new group is surprisingly led by none other than Ben!
Since both the groups are now in the same timeline, a face-off is inevitable, and fans cannot wait to see what the dynamics between the two would look like. ‘The Umbrella Academy’ is most likely to be renewed by 2021 and we sure are looking forward to it.
