Smallville: From Clark Kent to Superman
It has been 10 years since the show ended and still remains one of the most successful shows to have ever aired on The CW. Smallville was the story of a high schooler, Clark Kent, as he tried to come to terms with his alien origin and live a normal life alongside his friends Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), Pete Ross (Sam Jones III), Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) and nemesis Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum). The show traced Kent’s entire journey from being an ordinary student to becoming the Man of Steel himself. The focus of the first 4 seasons was on Kent’s school life and interactions with friends, while the subsequent seasons focused on his work at the Daily Planet with future partner, Lois Lane (Erica Durance).
The series gained popularity for its well-executed storytelling, performances of the actors as well as its music. The original Superman, Christopher Reeve also commended the content of the show expressing his approval of it. The series featured several popular heroes and villains from the DC universe. When it came to an end in 2011, its narrative was continued in a comic book series that started from the point where the show was concluded.
Attempts to bring back Smallville characters
A Smallville reboot has been in deliberation for several years. However, that hasn’t stopped The CW from bringing back its characters for a crossover. Recently, Tom Welling returned to his role of Superman in the latest Arrowverse crossover event, the 2019 mini-series, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor, was also approached to reprise his role from Smallville but declined.
The CW has over the years developed several shows led by DC characters such as Supergirl, Batwoman, Stargirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Black Lightning, among others. So, rebooting one of its most loved DC superhero shows, Smallville only seems the right thing to do at this point. Fans are eagerly waiting for the series to be brought back with the characters they so miss.

A reboot : What we know yet…
There is no confirmation regarding the show’s revival, however, according to sources, plans to bring back the show are very much in place. Considering how Rosenbaum turned down Crisis on Infinite Earths, there is a chance that he may not return for the reboot if it happens. Also, Allison Mack, who played Chloe, will not be seen in the reboot due to her arrest on accounts of sex trafficking and racketeering.
Tom Welling has time and again expressed his interest in playing the part again if a reboot happens. The cast reunited through a video call in July 2020 with Galaxy Con and discussed the possibility of bringing the series back. Whether the reboot will be based on the 2012 comic books or chart a time leap, only time will tell. But with the CW developing successful shows based on DC comics one after another, it will be interesting to see where the Smallville reboot will pick up and which stars would return to the series.
