‘Lupin’ writers confirm ‘Sherlock’ crossover
And there’s more to be excited for! According to George Kay, a ‘Sherlock’ crossover is also in the making.
As we know, the crime drama based on the lead character Assane is inspired by the Arsène Lupin books by author Maurice Leblanc. Those who have read the books know that it featured Sherlock Holmes as a supporting character. Notwithstanding the fact that the character was renamed “Herlock Sholmes” in later printings of the book because the author of the original Sherlock Holmes stories, Arthur Conan Doyle, held reservations. Arthur Conan Doyle complained that the character Holmes was created by him but was being used without his permission in other books.
Kay, while speaking about the copyright issue, told “RadioTimes.com”,
“It was a bit of a two fingers up to copyright! It’s not a very satisfying pun or play on words, but I do like the attitude behind it”.
He also revealed that just the way Sherlock entered the ‘Lupin’ books as Herlock Sholmes, he is planning a crossover of the detective in the Netflix series.
While talking, Kay was confused whether to call him Sherlock or Herlock. He emphasised that it is important for him to bring Sherlock Holmes to the show because he crossed paths in Leblanc’s original stories.
He said there are discussions going on and he’s really interested in exploring the plotline around Sherlock Holmes.
The Netflix show ‘Lupin’ hasn’t just transported Arsène Lupin stories to modern times, as done by BBC ‘Sherlock’. They instead have a gentleman thief Assane who is inspired by those stories. Kay teased that Assane might have a crossover with ‘Sherlock’ aficionado in a future episode in the later seasons.
Will Benedict Cumberbatch don the Sherlock cap again for a ‘Lupin’ crossover?
Since the writers of ‘Lupin’ have been considering how the detective might feature, we are eager to know if he is in talks with the makers of Benedict Cumberbatch led BBC drama ‘Sherlock’. Will ‘Lupin’ make Cumberbatch reprise his role as ‘Sherlock’ or Herlock? Will Cumberbatch be ready to don the ‘Sherlock’ cap but lose his name?
If you thought ‘Avengers’ was the biggest crossover event, ‘Sherlock’ crossover with ‘Lupin’ might surprise the world. One can expect a bitter competition and aggravation of rivalry between ‘Sherlock’ fans and ‘Lupin’ fans. The new crime drama has to lock antlers with the Sherlock Holmes fanbase. Kay accepted the fact and said that they want to take it to a really meta-level. He thinks the level of fun would be really cool, though he hasn’t discussed this aspect.
Who do you think will win in the battle between old Sherlock fans and the newbie fanbase of ‘Lupin’? Well, the series will certainly show Assane outsmart his frenemy “Herlock Sholmes”. Let us know who you want to see emerge victorious in the comments box below.
