Matt Reeves’ Batman 2021 starring Robert Pattinson is antagonist heavy but that isn’t necessarily a problem, because the idea comes straight out of hit HBO TV series Gotham.
- Historical failures of Batman at Box Office
- Biggest role of Robert Pattinson’s career
- High Standards set by Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy
- HBO’s Gotham – An unexpected mammoth success
- Matt Reeves has Gotham-inspired ideas for Batman 2021
Twilight star Robert Pattinson is set to take on perhaps the biggest challenge of his career – making a hit Batman movie. Many charismatic A-listers have tried their hands at the iconic Gotham saviour like George Clooney and Ben Affleck but have failed. But director Matt Reeves seems to have a plan that ensures Batman 2021 is out of the box success, and a lot of it is inspired by hit HBO series Gotham.
The Batman 2021 movie will be heavy on the baddies with reportedly four to six villains set to stand across the road from Robert Pattinson’s Batman. The mantra might come back to bit the makers. But it might give Pattinson’s Batman some time to settle if the first part puts the spotlight on the villains.
Batman’s Box Office Unreliability
Batman is by far the world’s most recognizable and loved superhero, even before enigmatic cinematic universes were born. Alongside Superman, Batman movies have enthralled the audience for 4 decades. While some have been blockbuster hits, a number of them have been embarrassing misses.
One thing that Batman movies stand out for is the massive hype that they build for their villains. Undeniably, Batman villains have more personality than any other bunch of comic book antagonists. But that hasn’t always transcended into sure shot success for the brand.
After Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, DC tried their hand on leveraging villains with Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. But both attempts direly failed.
HBO’s Gotham Hit The Cord
However, one creation from the Batman cannons that thrived on in-depth portrayal of villain personalities was HBO’s hit series Gotham. A young Bruce Wayne made way for Detective Jim Gordon to take the centre stage as the show kept bringing out one villain after another – focussing on their origin stories.
In a similar way, Batman 2021 is counting on its villains to add to the new Batman Robert Pattinson’s firepower. The villains to feature in the next year’s movie include Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin and Carmine Falcone. As per reports, the makers are taking inspiration from HBO’s Gotham TV series for Batman 2021 storyline.
What We Know – Batman 2021
As per the info we have so far, Robert Pattinson starrer Batman reboot is high on the antagonist agenda. The HBO’s Gotham inspired movie already has John Turturro as mob boss Carmine Falcone, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and Paul Dano as Riddler. Matt Reeves of ‘Planet of the Apes’ fame is directing the new world and will be hoping to create enough following for the movie to set up a trilogy.
Matt Reeves has a mammoth task at hand to live up to the standards of epic Batman movies like the 1989 blockbuster featuring the iconic Jack Nicholson’s Joker and Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. There have been disastrous outings for the caped vigilante in the past – 1997’s Batman & Robin with George Clooney, Ben Affleck starrer 2016 Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. Robert Pattinson’s Batman 2021 will be hoping that taking cue from the successful storyline from HBO’s Gotham.
