Tell Me, Do You Bleed?
After Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, DC might want to reprise Superman but not Henry Cavill
Superman is the global icon for 85 years on… He belongs to nobody and everyone. Superman, the word is synonymous to being a hero but how come – we never have an instant recall of any particular actor playing it. For example, when said, ‘Iron Man’ you see Robert Downey Jr, don’t you?

When it comes to a Marvel DC comparison fans undisputedly stick to their favourite superheroes on either side. But what usually isn’t considered widely is that the storytelling format of both the studios is very different.
MCU Vs DC: Story Telling Formats
Marvel Cinematic Universe thrives on its continuity whereas DCEU prefers to focus on each character’s story. In the MCU when Tony Stark dies, he dies – now there’s no way to bring the iconic character back (for the time being.) But in case of DCEU and holding company Warner Bros that’s not an issue. They allow every director to have their own take on the character.
So we have multiple Jokers to choose from and different versions of the caped crusader as well. In the last year a Warner Bros. production, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker grabbed multiple awards from BAFTA to Academy – it was a comic book movie with no superhero in it. The origin story worked beautifully onscreen while keeping it away from the shadows of Heath Ledger and Christopher Nolan’s iconic Joker.
And soon now we’d have director Matt Reeve’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. The initial look tests and set leaked footage has shown us that Reeve’s take is nothing like Affleck’s Batman. The Warner Bro Studio has managed to achieve the task of keeping narratives separate successfully in their productions.
And future project pipeline looks like the studio plans to encash the strategy with the Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Black Adam, Suicide Squad and more.
Except in one case, The Man of Steel or Superman as we know him…
Man of Steel Or Dark Knight Rip Off
Director Zack Snyder’s 2013, Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill kick-started the DCEU and explored the origin story of the titular character. The movie which garnered a mixed review from the audience was written by David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan. The duo told the tale in a way that it explores the origin story with no nostalgia attached.
The Superman we know has always been, shy, nerdy, selfless and cheerful! Man of Steel is just not that character that resonated with the legacy.
Cavill’s Superman is slightly dark, delving into gritty, moping, corners of Clark Kent’s existential crisis, his sense of purpose. He’s not that righteous and there are just too many moral conundrums. Cavill reprised the role for Batman VS Superman and last was sighted in the second half of 2017, Justice League.
When the news broke years back that the studio plans to let go of the actor. Both Henry Cavill and Warner Bro. Studios came out with separate statements denying the rumours.
There had been rumours of Henry Cavill featuring as Wolverine in the MCU.
But recently, speaking to Empire magazine, Cavill’s co-star Amy Adams who played Louis Lane hinted at new directions for the Superman. On being asked about playing the character again, she said, “I think [the studio is] moving in a different direction, from my understanding.”
With the understanding of characters in many of their avatars and able track record of presenting it to the audience. Maybe, after testing waters with Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, DC might want to reprise the iconic Superman with a new face.
No rooting for Robert Pattinson’s Batman Vs Henry Cavill’s Superman, please!
Hopefully, in more cheerful, optimistic d(w)ays!
