‘Ray Donavan’ – What’s it about?
Supported by a bang-on cast including Liev Schreiber, ‘Ray Donovan’ is a drama with one of the most gripping plotlines on TV. Created by Ann Biderman, ‘Ray Donovan’ is the story of the titular character trying to become the man of the family like he is expected to be. Ray is a law firm mediator employed to “fix” problems for people with fame and money, no matter the means. That means he is responsible for making a problem go away by any means, that includes anything illegal like bribing or threatening people for their lives. When ‘Ray Donovan’ first made it to the screens in 2013, it was unlike anything that the viewers had experienced before and soon the Showtime series was breaking records in viewership ratings.
‘Ray Donovan’ has received huge critical acclaim over the seasons, not to mention the bag full of awards that it had managed to pull in, including a Golden Globe. In fact, ‘Ray Donovan’ surprisingly maintained a striking consistency in its viewership ratings for seven seasons. However, season 7 of ‘Ray Donovan’ ended on a majorly interesting cliff-hanger, which, for obvious reasons, had prompted the fans to expect a season 8. But if the word going around is to be believed, season 8 of this edging drama seems to be living on shaky grounds. Is season 8 renewal at all possible for the show or are the rumours correct?
‘Ray Donovan’ cancelled ahead of season 8
Season 7 of ‘Ray Donovan’ premiered on Showtime in November 2019 and the finale appeared in January 2020. The tenth and final episode provided for a riveting finale of the season, although the cliff-hanger at the end of the finale left us hoping for an eighth season. However, all plans went down the drain when, in February 2020, news of the cancellation of ‘Ray Donovan’ was dropped ahead of season 8. The decision was unanticipated, to say the least given the high and consistent popularity of the Showtime series.
Apparently, the creators of ‘Ray Donovan’ had at least two more seasons on mind post the sixth season, which means season 8 was always on the cards. The shocking step of the show’s cancellation equally blindsided the ‘Ray Donovan’ team. The result was what the creators feel to be a sloppy and incomplete finale to the series. More so, since the season 7 finale of ‘Ray Donovan’ was never intended to be the series finale. Show-runner David Hollander told “Vulture”,
“We’re still scratching our heads. We had no indicator that the show was ending. We were behaving creatively as though we were in mid-sentence. And so, there was no sense that this was going to be a completion. This was in no way a series finale”.
The real reason behind season 8 cancellation
Nobody had seen it coming and yet it did happen! According to reports, things went wrong with respect to the financial and corporate aspects. It’s obvious that Hollywood and the showbiz industry sees more internal politics than the White House, and that is exactly how it went down for ‘Ray Donovan’ before it could enter season 8. Hollander had admitted that after season 5, the production budget for ‘Ray Donovan’ had seen a steep rise making the series an expensive one. Hollander explained,
“This is a big show. To be fair to our bosses, Ray Donovan, for the Showtime model, was a very expensive show. We were going into our eighth season with salaries and all the step-ups for union. And the move to New York was extraordinarily expensive, so there’s that”
Hollander became more specific with the details when he said,
“The corporate elements of show business are complicated and often mired in things that will never be spoken out loud. I think the easiest external impact was the merger [between CBS and Viacom]. Whatever new environment grew from the merger clearly had some impact on their choice”.
