Back in 2018, Netflix and the original show makers, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, announced a new live-action concoction. However, there hasn’t been a peep on the development until earlier this year when the duo announced production in the latter part of 2020. It seems the time is finally here.
When is Avatar: The Last Airbender releasing on Netflix?
The production of the new live-action series was planned to start in 2019. In May 2019, Konietzko posted on Instagram, “We’re writing, planning, and testing. There’s plenty that’s new for us in the long run in this live-action process. Right now, everything seems slow. Thankfully, Netflix is committed to doing it right. We’re trying to make something special that will stand the test of time.”

This happened when the show was still in the pre-production stage before the pandemic struck. Since then, the process had been put on halt until further notice. Therefore, it is safe to say, fans have to wait at least till 2022, if not more.

The cast hasn’t been confirmed yet, but they are open to looking for new faces. Through that same Instagram post, Bryan Konietzko made a casting call as well, saying, “We’ll be starting the casting process soon. So if you’re aspiring to be a part of this, keep taking acting lessons and some martial arts/movement classes. We’ll announce where, how, and when to audition soon.”
Fans have been elated since then. One of the series’ fans, @all_F808Z tweeted some of his moves.
Fans think the series will feature a secret Airbender
According to a post by inverse.com, netizens believed Ty Lee could be the secret Airbender who will join Aang. Let us remind you, Ty Lee was first introduced in season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon as an acrobatic fighter from Fire Nation with a bubbly personality. Her passion for reading people’s auras and a similar physical appearance to Aang make fans believe that she might be a secret Airbender.
What can you watch while waiting?
While you are waiting for the new series to come, you can enjoy the first spin-off of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The show gained so much love and appreciation from fans that the Avatar franchise launched a follow-up series The Legend of Korra. It can only be streamed in CBS All Access.
It is set in 70 years after Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows Korra as the next Avatar from the Southern Water Tribe. With the skills from the earth, the water, and the fire, Korra must master the art of air-bending and must find a master. Korra’s expedition leads her to Republic City, a place where benders and non-benders live together. However, soon she realizes that the land is growing anti-bending and is plagued by crime. Therefore, while fighting against all the dangers, Korra begins her air-bending training under the guidance of Aang’s son, Tenzin. Are you curious too about the upcoming live-action series?
