The streaming world has been ruled by Netflix for a while now. But HBO’s new streaming app which premiered on May 27th might be giving Netflix the competition to knock it off its feet.
I like to call the art of streaming a hidden riddle which only gets tougher as you unlock a new problem at every level. The first step is of course choosing the streaming app you wish to binge on or have the subscription to. Is it Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Apple TV?
Highlights:
- The user interface makes it or breaks it: Netflix vs HBO Max
- Content Streaming: Netflix vs HBO Max
- The Final Showdown: HBO Max vs Netflix
The second level is to discover what you want to watch, which might be tougher than the first step itself. But before you unlock the first step there is a bonus difficulty of a new streaming app in the market for consumers to confuse further. HBO Max has premiered to a lot of anticipation, buzz, and excitement to it’s US audience on May 27th.
But has it lived up to the hype of being a probable contender to knock off the crown off of Netflix’s head? Let’s find out if Netflix has finally met its match in HBO Max.
User Interface Makes it or Breaks it: Netflix vs HBO Max
It appears that HBO Max investing billions and billions of dollars in the future of Television is fuelled by some extremely clever moves. The second you take in the HBO Max homepage, you realise that the interface is remarkably user friendly. It’s visually stimulating and provides a lot of shapes to differentiate the content the viewers are consuming. In HBO Max, a landscape rectangle represents a single episode whereas a square shape will represent your watch history.
Whereas, Netflix functions with data-driven recommendations and keeps its visuals uniform. HBO Max is clearly taking risks with the imagery and by the looks of it, it’s working. But the visuals come at a price- HBO Max is at the moment the most expensive streaming app with a price tag of $15. To compare Netflix stands at $13 and Disney+ at $7.

Content Streaming: Netflix vs HBO Max
Once you pass the initial shock of the visuals HBO Max offers, there is an even more user-friendly interface to shake up your belief in Netflix and wonder if Netflix has finally found it’s a rightful match. Netflix has a limited search button. Now you might not have believed it until you find how much of an in-depth service HBO Max offers when it comes to its search button. The categories offered range from “DC Comics” “Book Adaptations” “Old-school Sitcoms” and thousands of curated movies and TV shows under their rightful category.
And as you further make your way in to HBO Max you realise you can search for content by the name of an actor/actress. HBO Max has made the entire experience about you and only you. It’s clear that the impression HBO Max wants to leave with you is that it’s a product of thought and curated with care just for you.
And when it comes to the catalogue offered to the consumers, Netflix offers the biggest catalogue out of all the other streaming apps there are. Whether it is Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu but HBO Max is right up there at the top with a library as big as Netflix and as personalised too. So, is HBO Max the rightful heir to the throne that Netflix so aloofly sits on?

At the end of all the levels and problems on the way, you have one question to ask: What is it offering that is original content? Yes, Netflix has one of the biggest catalogues and HBO Max has certainly given Netflix a good competition. But Netflix is also the proud game-changer of how major studios are now competing with the likes of when it comes to producing content. Content like Martin Scorsese’s Irishman with a budget of $150 Million which went on to win numerous Academy Awards. Or Tiger King which started a pop-culture phenomenon.

Right now, HBO Max consumers have Anna Kendrick’s anthology series Love Life, Seth Rogen’s comedy An American Pickle and most importantly The Friends Reunion whose reminder you are given on the app every second. And if HBO Max wants to have the upper hand from Netflix and make its global presence known, it needs to step up its original content game because Netflix revolutionised its.
And at the end of the day, people are the nostalgia hungry and hungry for good content. Currently, Netflix is winning at both. It will interesting to see what approach HBO Max approaches the consumers with. Will it be more towards expanding their catalogue or focusing on original content? Well, till HBO Max figure out their future moves, it’s too soon to convert dedicated mass consumers from a brand they’re comfortable with. Netflix stands tall, untouched, even by the shadows of its competitors. HBO Max, your move. We’re watching.
