What is the show about?
Created and developed by Mean Girls’ Tina Fey, ’30 Rock’ was based on her real-life experiences at ‘Saturday Night Live’. The show centers on the professional and personal life of Tina Fey starring as Liz Lemon, who is the head writer of a comedy sketch series called ‘TGS with Tracy Jordan’. Lemon plays a liberal and a “know it all” who often finds herself in a clash with her egotistical network executive Jack Donaghy (played by Alec Baldwin). Every season surprises viewers with a variety of story arcs that include both workplace and personal plotlines, from Liz’s complicated love life to Jack’s constant bid for corporate power and Kenneth’s trip to the Beijing Olympics.
Even after so many years, ’30 Rock’ is remembered for its satirical take on NBC and the whole of the entertainment industry. The frantically-paced comedy and its satire won the show nominations for a staggering 103 Emmy Awards. Not just that, ‘30 Rock’ also went on to bag the best comedy trophy for three consecutive years. ‘30 Rock’s’ first pilot episode aired on October 11, 2006, and the show continued for about seven seasons. The show dropped its last episode on January 31, 2013.
Cast of the show
As mentioned before, the multi-talented Tina Fey not only developed the show but also played the lead Liz Lemon, head writer and showrunner of “The Girlie Show”, immediately renamed TGS With Tracy Jordan by her new boss and network’s executive producer Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin).
Jane Krakowski played “The Girlie Show” star Jenna Maroney, who is replaced by movie star Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan). Jack McBrayer stars as enthusiastic NBC page Kenneth Parcell while Scott Adsit plays Liz Lemon’s producer, friend, and confidante Peter Hornberger. The satirical comedy also features a set of high-profile guest stars and cameo appearances featuring celebrities like Chris Parnell, Jason Sudeikis, Jon Hamm, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, and Salma Hayek.
Is ‘30 Rock’ returning for season 8?
After entertaining its fans for a total of 138 episodes and seven seasons, the show wrapped its run in 2013. Ending the unconventional show that enjoyed solid ratings and a cult following was a collective decision, revealed Fey in an interview with “HuffPost”. Fey said, “We’ve told a lot of good stories, I think, and we’ve had a lot of fun”. However, not everyone has accepted the show’s end as gracefully as Fey. Alec Baldwin, the series’ most outspokenly fickle star, said that he still wants more of the show. In several interviews, he teased that he would have continued for longer in the show.
“I offered NBC to cut my pay 20 percent in order to have a full 7th and 8th seasons of ‘30 Rock’”, he told “The Hollywood Reporter”. “I realize times have changed.” Another cast member, Jane Krakowski, in an interview, opened up about the possibility of a revival and said that it would be a dream come true for the cast.
Even though there is no official confirmation about the renewal of the show, NBC pumped up the show’s fanbase in 2020 by surprising them with a remote reunion special of ‘30 Rock’. In the special episode, characters like Liz Lemon (Fey) and Kenneth Parcell (McBrayer) graced the screen, while talent from other NBC series also joined as guest appearances.
The sudden reunion fueled the fire of rumours that the show will soon be renewed for a season 8. However, the possibility of the show returning with a season 8 is currently up in the air. Until an official confirmation on the renewal comes around, you can watch the reruns of all seven seasons of ‘30 Rock’ on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, and iTunes
