All about the show
Inspired by the real-life clairvoyant Allison DuBois, the show features Patricia Arquette as a suburban mother and a psychic who uses her superpowers to prevent crimes in the city while, at the same time, dealing with the outcomes of brain surgery and its long-lasting side effects. It is one of the most inventive shows that has graced the small screen over the last few years.
Patricia, seen in the show as a resident of Phoenix, is constantly balancing her life with her engineer husband Joe (Jake Weber) and her three daughters: Sofia Vassilieva as Ariel; Maria Lark as Bridgette; and Madison and Miranda Carabello as Marie. She works for a psychic consultancy with Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval), the District Attorney, and a friendly cop Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt). Each episode loosely begins with Patricia having a supernatural dream and then moves to and fro between the conscious and subconscious as she moves forward in solving the cases. The show has a very balanced composition wherein the viewers spend equal amounts of time with her work life and personal life.
‘Medium’, as a show, boasted of a terrific cast that kept its viewers on the edge while turning supernatural into both scary and amazing whilst fighting crimes. It also led Arquette to win an Emmy for her extraordinary role as a mom and psychic.

Why was it cancelled?
‘Medium’ has already cracked two homes, is it due for another one?
The show aired for several years on the lesser watched NBC network. At one point, the show even managed to bring in a viewership of approximately 16 million, a figure NBC would kill for today. However, despite that, the network’s then-chief Ben Silverman made the controversial decision to end its five-season run because, as he told reporters on a conference call, according to him it lacked the kind of fan support that kept series like ‘Chuck’ on air.
Within 24 hours of being cancelled after 5 seasons, the show found its second and new home in CBS. CBS Television Studios added the supernatural fiction to its 2009-10 lineup, to premiere between ‘Ghost Whisperer’ and ‘Numbers’ on Friday nights. CBS entertainment president, Nina Tassler told reporters, “If ‘Ghost Whisperer’ and ‘Numbers’ had an offspring, it would be ‘Medium’”.
However, within 2 years of running, the psychic star made a prediction and told “EW”, “We got cancelled” and the show only had two more episodes to shoot. Previously the episodic order of the show was cut from 22 to 13, and soon after Patricia’s prediction, showrunner and creator Glenn Gordon Caron confirmed the same via Facebook: CBS had canned the drama.
The show was then averaging at 7.1 million viewers. The creator told “Deadline”, “It’s true. Allison Dubois will dream her last dream on ‘Medium’, Friday, January 21st. In what we believe will be a series-defining episode, Allison and her family will stare destiny in the eye. And destiny will not blink”.
Will Patricia see the future, once again?
Its been 15 years since ‘Medium’ aired, and the lady of the house has predicted the future once again, just like she did earlier. According to Patricia, there are probabilities of a reboot in the future.
In an on-air conversation with “Closer Weekly”, when asked about a reboot, she mentioned, “I haven’t been approached about one, and I know there has kind of been some talk online about that. I would definitely read it; I mean, the writing was so great and I love all those people. So I would definitely think about it. I miss all those people”. Alongside that, there were also rumours of a reboot that took the internet by storm on 30th July 2020.
Bringing down rumours of a ‘Medium’ movie, Patricia mentioned that it would be terrible if they do something and it does not turn out to be good. She added, “It was so terrific … If we did a ‘Medium movie’ and it sucked, then it would, you know, blemish it”.
Previously, the actress also mentioned in an interview, “I don’t want to see old Allison Dubois”. That only leaves us with the possibility of a remake, with a fresh new cast, basically ‘Medium 2.0’.
While we wish and pray that we hear confirmations of ‘Medium 2.0’, let us know your thoughts on the show! You can binge-watch the show on Amazon Prime or CBS.
