Max had one of the most enigmatic stories in ‘Black Sails’. However, her ending is left open when the show ends. So, what happened to her after that? Will she get a spin-off?
There’s a foreboding sadness enveloping ‘Black Sails’. When it ends, the battles have ended, and there’s peace, but you’re kept wondering about the specks of characters left behind. None of the characters leave a mark quite as dark. Now in power, the former prostitute holds the keys to the island, but what happens after that? Will she get a happy ending?
- Max is one of the best characters in ‘Black Sails’
- What makes her character perfect for a spin-off?
- What happened to Max after ‘Black Sails’?
The Story of Max
The first season of ‘Black Sails’ is as gut-wrenching as a season can be. Max is dragged out of her space of comfort, raped, and tortured till she’s an empty husk. The pain forms much of the narrative of the first half of the season as Max slowly realizes that in the pirate world, power matters, and relationships are volatile.
So, it is played as a victory lap that, throughout the rest of the seasons, she has a meteoric rise. Positioning herself in the centre of the story, becoming one of the main characters, and influencing real-time decisions instead of merely being a pawn, Max’s story is one of resilience, and her backstory and future are both left open-ended.
One of the recurring themes of ‘Black Sails’ is an exploration of personality in the backdrop of crime and colonialism. Max is the centre of conflict and often the one suffering, so when she gets out and becomes the de-facto ruler of Nassau, you’re left hankering for a spin-off of ‘Black Sails’.
Not only is Max one of the best characters in the series, but her story also intersects with Lady Bonny, the badass female pirate of Vain’s crew. Rackham, Bonny, and Max can make the core of any outstanding series. However, being in power and doing what they want is something that you want to watch again and again.
A female character spin-off of ‘Black Sails’ is a great thing that can be talked about. Max is left with an open ending. Indeed, the British forces would slowly take over Nassau. However, max is left to manoeuvre the power dynamics in the former pirate island now.
If there’s one thing that ‘Black Sails’ lacked, it is focus on the politics behind the governance of the island. With pirates ruling the place, the story tended to be about power alone. What happens when politics get involved?
Max from ‘Black Sails’ needs to have her story told
With assassinations and murders getting more common in the ages when ‘Black Sails’ is set, Max could be set up as the power which executes her political opponents using pirates in the process. There’s no possibility of a truly happy ending for her, but the story could take turns to give her satisfying stories of deceit and cunning. Max is often overlooked in the series as someone who does not have enough bran or influence to change Nassau’s future.
However, with proper political backing and the power centred around her, Max could become a power to be reckoned with.
There have been enough clues for a future spin-off. Max’s story is open-ended. And Jessica Park Kennedy, who has played a superhero character in ‘The Flash’ since then, has the action chops to pull off an action-adventure Max series. A spin-off of ‘Black Sails’ must play into themes of anarchy and political intrigue, and with the current state of TV, the show could easily make a comeback.
Max is perfect for the spin-off
There were great characters in ‘Black Sails’. However, Max is probably the best suited for the female character spin-off of ‘Black Sails’ due to her complete story. Not only is her past left more or less unexplored, but her future as the de-facto ruler of Nassau is also worth looking into.
The script writes itself, especially with the colonialism rise and its history ending with colonial powers’ rise. Seeing a woman of colour managing power through the islands’ racist British rule makes for a compelling story.
The best story, perhaps, would be her taking over the island for herself finally. The puppet ruler being deposed is an intriguing story that we never got into at the time. And seeing Jessica Parker Kennedy in her Instagram post here, we can be sure she’ll be a badass hero in her own female character spin-off of ‘Black Sails’.
Max has an enduring quality to her that has lasted beyond the ending of ‘Black Sails’. It’s time the producers gave her a spin-off and cement her character further with more stories. Let us know what you think about a spin-off based on Max. Write to us in the comments section below.
