Netflix is all set to win over two fan bases of Terminator and Batman with ‘The Batman’ co-writer Mattson Tomlin creating the Terminator anime.
If in case you thought ‘The Terminator’ legacy is dead, then you were obviously wrong. Regardless of how the various adaptations and reboots of the original ‘Terminator’ have performed, the first two original creations by James Cameron i.e. ‘The Terminator’, ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’, have never fallen short of the fanbase and the scope of extending the story. Now Netflix has taken up the task of catering to the Terminator phenomenon for the new-age audience. How? By adapting it into an anime series. ‘The Batman’ co-writer Mattson Tomlin is creating the Terminator anime series for Netflix. Netflix has announced they are working on a Terminator anime series to be helmed by ‘The Batman’ co-writer Mattson Tomlin. The Netflix adaptation is going to be a co-production with Skydance and Production I.G.
‘The Terminator’ universe has seen a total of 6 movies, 1 TV show, 2 web series, several games, and more. However, an anime adaptation of ‘The Terminator’ will open a whole new world of possibilities.
The Vice President of Japan & Anime at Netflix, John Derderian, said during the announcement of the project:
“Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created. And has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”
How much of ‘The Batman’ will Tomlin bring into the anime?
The anime series announcement has fueled excitement among the fans, as they can literally imagine the storytelling capacity of the terminator concept in anime format. However, fans are wondering if the association of ‘The Batman’ co-writer Mattson Tomlin will bring in some familiar Batman storytelling pattern in the anime.
As Mattson Tomlin himself admitted that he has a very distinct style, which we will be experiencing in ‘The Batman’, and probably in Netflix’s Terminator anime series as well.
Tomlin, who is known for his big and dark concepts, said in a statement while discussing the Terminator anime project:
“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
Tomlin has written ‘Power Project’ (2020) for Netflix, and ‘Little Fish’ (2021). He is also writing movie and TV adaptations for several comic books and animes which include ‘Fear Agent’, ‘Memetic’, and ‘Mega Man’.
Tomlin further revealed that Netflix’s Terminator anime series will not be a reboot of the original ‘The Terminator’, instead, it will be expanding the world created by James Cameron.
