‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey’ was the only comic book hit of 2020. In a dismal year, Margot Robbie starrer surpassed everybody’s expectations by racking in critical and consumer praise. Is Poison Ivy already part of the DCEU?
The opening scene of ‘Harley Quin: Birds of Prey is iconic. Harley talks about her exes and her life. She talks about two men and one woman in her past. The woman’s part is essential because, in the video, the character looks like Dr Pamela Isley, otherwise known as Poison Ivy.
The character of Poison Ivy has gone through many iterations in the comics. ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ has her character (shown in this video) looking exactly like the movie’s animation. So, could Poison Ivy already be foreshadowed in the DCEU?
There’s evidence that directors and other people have wanted to explore the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy for a while.
However, Poison Ivy has a less-than-stellar history of appearing on the big screen. Uma Thurman’s appearance as the character in ‘Batman & Robin’ might have been on point with the costumes but missed the brief big time with the character’s motivations and needs.
So, could Poison Ivy be in Margot Robbie’s ‘Birds of Prey 2’? And if she is, will she be written well?
Who is Poison Ivy?
Dr Pamela Isley was an excellent scientist, a brilliant environmentalist, and someone who adored natural life all around her. All changed in her life when a mentor injected her with toxins and poisons to give her her powers.
Though Poison Ivy has been an enduring foe for Batman, she more often than not is an anti-hero. She wants to save the planet and goes after corporations and people who are destroying it. Batman even agrees with her sometimes, only disagreeing with her methods, which often kills her victims.
In her series, she often interacts with Swamp Thing and has an ongoing relationship with Harley Quinn. The two became close friends after Joker left Harley, with Poison Ivy serving her role as a romantic interest for Harley Quinn and helping her rebuild her life after the horrific abuse that Joker inflicted on her.
Poison Ivy is also one of the sexiest women in DC comics, having had relationships with Batman and other heroes and villains over the years. Since she is usually depicted as a sexy temptress, her stories show her baiting other characters with her sexual appeal.
What makes Poison Ivy work well is the strange environment she creates whenever she is in a comic. She could play the femme fatale or the activist, and both of those roles are perfect for her. It’s not enough to ask whether Poison Ivy is evil or good. Her character always opens up further discussions about the nature of activism itself.
Is she perfect for ‘Birds of Prey’?
‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey’ ended on a sad note. The characters were not going to end up together, and issues were going on within the group. However, online fans have chimed in to say that they loved the movie and want a sequel.
Given the praise and hype around ‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey,’ there seems to be a definite possibility that ‘Birds of Prey 2’ might be happening soon. Given that the writer and director are interested in covering the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, the story could become one of the best stories that DCEU has to tell.
Poison Ivy is an essential character in the DC lore and plays a significant part in Batman’s life and other comic books’ characters. So, when Poison Ivy joins ‘Birds of Prey 2’ movie, it would be a surefire hit with longtime fans.
Poison Ivy is a character that has had a constant role in the comics surrounding Harley Quinn and ‘Birds of Prey’. Given her past roles, she would be a perfect fit for a future iteration of the movie. And who knows what’s hidden in the DC Multiverse, though one thing is for sure WB is doing diversity right and another strong female character after Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the need of the hour. We only have to wait and see whether Poison Ivy will be in ‘Birds of Prey’.
