How ‘Manhunt: Unabomber’ performed?
‘Manhunt’ gained international acclaim, upon its release on Discovery. It was lauded by audiences as well as critics, mainly for its gripping narrative, investigative beats, and seamless pace. According to the review aggregation website, Rotten Tomatoes, the show holds a 93% approval rating, and critical consensus for the series reads, “Engrossing and affecting, ‘Manhunt: Unabomber’ uses a taut, meticulously constructed narrative to uncover the facts behind the oft-exaggerated true story”.
‘Manhunt: Deadly Games’, the second instalment, also managed to garner steady ratings. The favourable reviews about the series bring us to the natural question – Will there be a ‘Manhunt’ Season 3? Scroll down to find out.
Release date of ‘Manhunt’ Season 3
Discovery squashed the hopes of another season despite the unprecedented success of the scripted drama on the network. The network cancelled the series for season 2 to focus on its strength, i.e., unscripted docuseries.
The series was proposed to Charter Communications after enough back and forth. They picked it up for two seasons to premiere on Spectrum, of which one of the season ‘Manhunt: Deadly Games’ or ‘Manhunt’ Season 2 has already been released on February 3, 2020. Spectrum is bound by a contract to release the third season. It is safe to assume that ‘Manhunt’ Season 3 will release sometime in 2021, because of its ever-increasing popularity.
About the series
Focusing on the FBI’s longest and most expensive investigation, ‘Manhunt: Unabomber‘ takes the audience on a hunt for a domestic terrorist, Theodore John Kaczynski. He is also referred to as UNABOMBER, an acronym given to him by the FBI, which stands for University and Airline Bomber. Notorious during 1978 and 1995, he is responsible for taking three lives and injuring 23 others by carrying out a bombing campaign across the US.
Season two of ‘Manhunt’ titled ‘Manhunt: Deadly Games’ focusses on the explosive case of Eric Robert Rudolph. Rudolph is a terrorist responsible for bombings executed between 1996 and 1998 in the US. He does this because of his anti-abortion and anti-gay beliefs. For his notoriety, he is also known as Olympic Park Bomber.
The series also features the true story of a security guard and officer, Richard Jewell (deceased), who was falsely accused of planting the bombs and was tainted by the media. The story is heartbreaking because the same security guard is initially hailed as the hero, for alerting the police and saving multiple lives. Jewell bears the brunt of Rudolph’s doing, faces media scrutiny, and succumbs to heart failure at the age of 44. We can expect ‘Manhunt’ to follow another compelling case in the third season that delves deep into the twisted mind of a terrorist who sparks a nationwide ‘Manhunt’.
Cast of ‘Manhunt’
The cast is entirely different for each season since it’s an anthology series. The first season of ‘Manhunt’ featured MCU movies alum Paul Bettany as the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, and ‘Avatar’ fame Sam Worthington as FBI officer Jim Fitzgerald, who proves capable in bringing the terrorist to justice. The supporting cast comprises Keisha Castle-Hughes (of ‘True Blood’ fame) as Tabby Milgrim, Jeremy Bobb as Stan Cole, Brían F. O’Byrne as Frank McAlpine, Lynn Collins as Natalie Rogers, Elizabeth Reaser as Ellie Fitzgerald, Ben Weber as Andy Genelli, and Chris Noth as Don Ackerman.
The second season of the series starred Jack Huston who essays the character of the sinister Olympic Park Bomber, and Eric Rudolph Cameron Britton as Richard Jewell, the security guard who is falsely accused of a deadly crime. You may have already seen Eric in ‘Mindhunter’ where he gave a blood-curdling performance as the notorious serial killer Ed Kemper. Arliss Howard plays bomb expert Earl Embry, Gethin Anthony as Jack Brennan, and Kelly Jenrette as Stacey Knox.
