‘Luna Nera’ strikes the right chord with its bewitching witches
The supernatural period drama is based in 17th century Italy and borrows from a series of ‘Luna Nera’ books. It follows a young woman named Ade (Nina Fotaras) who, after a series of events, finds out that she comes from a long line of witches. Living in a village where witches are hunted down and killed, she and her brother are given shelter by her mother’s friends in the woods which are inaccessible to the group of hunters, Benandanti. As the show progresses, Ade falls in love with the son of Benandanti’s leader as she fights for her survival.

It stars Nina Fotaras, Giorgio Belli, Gloria Carovana, Giandomenico Cupaiuolo, and Adalgisa Manfrida in pivotal roles. The show is a fantasy representation of a period during which men would kill the women they were afraid of or the ones that rebelled and justified such actions by calling them ‘witches’. The show’s vulnerable take on the barbaric practice of witch-hunting inevitably makes the viewers question society’s brutal treatment of women for centuries now. It tries to bring across a powerful message with a magical backdrop.
The first season was quite popular in European countries. So, what is taking Netflix this long in renewing the series?
Lukewarm reviews from the critics
Despite having an intriguing concept, the series somewhat falls flat in its execution. What could have been a path-breaking series revolving around witches, seems rather dull compared to other supernatural Netflix originals such as ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ and ‘The Witcher’.
Although the series does seem to have a lot of potential with its captivating plot, twists, suspenseful moments, and dramatic revelations, the first season of ‘Luna Nera’ relies so heavily on utilitarian philosophies, feminist ideals, and its lacklustre romantic angle that it often leaves room for plot-holes. This makes the 6 episodes quite predictable, which was apparently intentional according to Francesca Comencini, the director of the first two episodes. She was quoted saying, “There is nothing more magical than reality and nothing more realistic than magic. Witches are strong, rebellious women who don’t step back. A universal figure that is back in fashion, the greatest utopia of our time. Magic shows us a different way of being in the world, with women who do not submit and escape the rules, and even if discriminated against they are not victims”.
Its small budget causes it to lack grandeur, but despite that, the series certainly comes with a lot of promise and capability of becoming an iconic endeavour.
Season 2: Has the show been renewed?
Netflix is yet to renew ‘Luna Nera’ for a second season. ‘Luna Nera’ Season 1 ending had a cliffhanger, so fans were expecting the show to get renewed soon. The series showed the potential of becoming widely popular during its first season, so we hope that Netflix approves a season 2 soon. Fantasy shows are the flavour of the season with series like ‘The Umbrella Academy’, ‘The Witcher’, ‘Lock & Key’, and ‘The Order’ doing really well on Netflix, and considering how season 1 of ‘Luna Nera’ opened with high ratings, the odds of returning are in its favour for sure.
There are many questions that come to fans’ minds: What happens in the ‘Luna Nera’ books? Will the second season follow from the books as well, and if so, who will comprise the ‘Luna Nera’ Season 2 cast?
