Harley Quinn and the Joker’s toxic and abusive relationship
Harley Quinn was briefly introduced to us on ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in 1992. Earlier, Quinn was just a sidekick. Soon Harley Quinn’s character clicked with the audience, and we got to see her abusive relationship with the Joker. It involved hitting her, throwing her out of buildings, and playing mind games with her. The audience was quick to spot an unhealthy pattern of domestic violence. The Joker would thrash her and then pursue her back. Which we saw him do in the ‘Birds of Prey‘ movie as well. Once she also explained his behaviour and said:
“Do not get me wrong, my Puddin’s a little rough, but he loves me, really.”
In one episode, Quinn was shocked to learn that the Joker abandoned her for a mission in which he planned to blow up Gotham City. In one scene, he also taunted her that she did not have the guts. Quinn ended up pulling the trigger but instead was loaded with a sign that read: “Rat tat tat.” However, it turned out to be a turn-on for the Joker.
Do the Joker and Harley Quinn suffer from personality disorders?
Harley Quinn’s first job was a resident psychiatrist at a Gotham Hospital. But, she did not enjoy Gotham and decided to leave. She began working at the Arkham Asylum where she later met the Joker. She appeared to have an obsession with the most difficult patients at the asylum.
After her session with Joker, she became obsessed with him too. She started to feel connected to him when he shared lies about his miserable childhood. After a murder at the Arkham Asylum, Harley helped the Joker escape and decided to join him. As per all her traits, we can easily believe that Harley Quinn suffers from a personality disorder. This disorder depicts traits like unstable emotions, self-image distortion, and attention-seeking behaviour. The attention-seeking behaviour pushes the person to create or engage in dramatic scenarios to gain attention.
Harley Quinn always wishes to be the centre of attention, is easily influenced, and considers her relationship to be more intimate than it actually is.
In ‘The Dark Knight’, the Joker is portrayed as a loner, glib, emotionless, and extremely violent. These behavioural traits can easily be concluded as psychopathy. Just like Harley Quinn, the Joker also suffers from a personality disorder. The Joker as a psychopath is intelligent and often easily manages to manipulate people around him. However, people with a personality disorder tend to view others as either ruthless predators or prey.
The Joker and Harley Quinn in a movie?
In 2021, James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ will bring back most of its iconic characters, except Jared Leto as the Joker. The earlier ‘Suicide Squad‘ introduced us to many anti-heroes such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, and Slipknot. It also introduced us to Jared Leto as Joker. But, unfortunately, his character was not appreciated well by the audience and the critics. It was due to that reason that DCEU decided to leave the Joker. Hence, be ready to see Harley Quinn with the Joker in the 2021 movie.
During a Q&A session on Instagram, James Gunn was asked if he can justify having a ‘Suicide Squad’ movie without Joker. To which he said:
“No one but me and a few others knows all the characters in the movie, but if the Joker is not in the film, I don’t think it would be strange as he is not a part of the Suicide Squad in the comics.”
