How Laura was the Donna for ‘That ’70s Show’ even before she actually auditioned
‘That ’70s Show’ essentially gave the actress her big break, because before that Laura wasn’t as well-known. Laura had to attend an audition, like any other actor.
Currently, Laura is doing great as a mom of two young kids. For the most part, she has put her ’70s days behind her. Though she has moved on from the series, since a long time, ‘That ’70s Show’ was basically her life. She, as Donna, essentially became the main character.
The show’s creators knew Laura Prepon was the actress they wanted as Donna Pinciotti, from the moment she walked into the audition for ‘That ’70s Show’.
According to “EW”, after she nabbed the role, Laura asked the team what it was that hooked them to her.
The show’s creators, Bonnie and Terri Turner, explained to her,
“First of all, when you came in, you just were Donna. You were Donna Pinciotti; you were perfect for her”
Laura was more than just her looks that fit the part, though, and she elaborated why.
She said,
“At the end of the audition, I looked at them and I said, ‘We good?’ And I put my hands on the table and I pushed off like a total tomboy”
The creators saw Donna in her with those two words that she uttered.

Laura explained, “It was just how I got up from my table. They said that sealed the deal”, and her career was sealed in ‘That ’70s Show’.
Laura had countless other opportunities, too, though she graced ‘That ’70s Show’ for too long. She said that she had a great time on the show as the series was edgy and fun for its era. Later, when the series ended, Laura took on bigger and even more impactful roles.
Why is Laura Prepon only remembered as Donna or Alex?
Then came ‘Orange Is the New Black‘, where she played a recurring character Alex Vause and dyed her hair black for so long that it became her signature look. Her hair colour became an instant hit and fans were unsure, for a time, what her true hair colour was.
Fans loved Laura as Alex on OITNB, the revolutionary show for women of all diversity. She effortlessly morphed into that role just like she did as Donna on ‘That 70s Show’. OINTB also ran for seven seasons spanning six years, and she spent a significant time in the prison on the show.
Though Laura also starred in ‘The Girl on the Train’ and has 20-something other credits for her acting, she is more popular as Donna and Alex. Fans generally remember actors for the character he/she plays for long.
