The show about nothing may just have been based on everything from its creator’s life!
The most interesting stories are drawn from real life. Who’d know better than the creators of ‘Seinfeld’, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, who made millions and a devoted, lasting and still ongoing fan base by making a show about nothing? (Really, Larry David is one of the world’s richest comedians with a net worth of $400 million!)
Highlights —
- The show featured versions of David’s father, neighbour, and more
- Who is the real-life George Constanza?
It is well-known that many stories and plots of the iconic sitcom were drawn from the lives of ‘Seinfeld’s’ writers and stars. Not so well known is the fact that even the characters themselves were based on real people. Turns out, the ‘Seinfeld’ story based on, more or less, real life!
The show featured versions of David’s father, neighbour, and more
When basing characters on real-life, Larry David preferred to look at those closest to him. It is no surprise then that a lot of them ended up turning into fictional versions on the show, including David’s own father, Morty David.
Morty is actually put to play the part of Jerry’s father, though the name and characterisation belong to the real-life Morty, who was also a Florida-based retiree who was involved in the men’s clothing business.
Elaine Benes was based on a lot of people, but some of them included a few women that Larry David used to date. Even the character of Kramer, bizarre as he is, is based on someone named Kenny Kramer who lived across the hall from David when he used to live in New York as a struggling comedian.
Who is the real-life George Costanza?
Now the question that pops up is, were any of the characters based on Larry David?
As it turns out, George Costanza is actually a fictionalised version of Larry David himself.

The story goes that Jerry Seinfeld was approached by the network NBC to make a sitcom. Seinfeld created a character and based him upon himself, and he was also going to act as him. David, however, didn’t want to appear on the show, so he created a different character based on himself.
In fact, many of George’s storylines, including the one where he shows up to work on Monday after quitting on the Friday before and pretends nothing happened, are drawn from David’s real-life experiences.
Most of the characters in the sitcom have been based on actual personages. So it’s fine to say that ‘Seinfeld’ was based on Larry David’s life. It was, in a way!
