‘The King of Queens’ remains one of the best sitcoms of all-time. But what if Kaley Cuoco, known for playing Penny in CBS’ hilarious sitcom ‘The Big Bang Theory’, joins season 10 of the cult classic?
‘The King of Queens’ was a popular sitcom that ran for just over a decade, helping to kick start Leah Remini and Kevin James’ careers in showbiz. The show largely followed the newlyweds Doug (Kevin James) and Carrie Heffernan (Leah Remini). The couple lives a relatively normal life until Carrie’s goofy father Arthur, played by Jerry Stiller, moves into their home. Once Arthur moves in, he wreaks havoc on everyone’s lives and clashes with Doug in the most hilarious ways possible.

Kevin James served as executive producer on the CBS series, which originally premiered in 1998 and ran nine seasons up till now. Anyone who is familiar with the show still recalls the iconic relationship between its blue-collar couple and their entertaining shenanigans besides the show’s comic timing.
What made the show a cult classic?
Not all sitcoms age finely. In the hindsight, fans often realize how they are filled with outdated jokes and offensive setups that make the shows unwatchable as the society evolves. As sitcoms continue to struggle on television and studios, networks and producers look at ways to reinvent their show and pivot the stories, the makers of ‘The Kings of Queens’ explain the reasons behind the series’ success.
According to the producers, one of the things that worked for the show is how it was rooted in the traditional genre of comedy besides its good writing and direction.
“If you look at the younger generation, they want to see something other than the traditional family with the couch in the living room and the staircase going upstairs”, says Steve Mosko, president of Sony Pictures Television told Today.

He further added,
“But these types of comedies work. It really gets down to ‘Can they execute the format? Is the writing good?’ In the case of ‘The King of Queens’ it was, and it stood the test of time”.
However, just like the loyal fans of the show the creators never understood why despite the show’s comedy and an ensemble of cast comprising of fine actors, it was denied its due recognition.
“The thing that really irked me over the years is that Kevin, Leah, and Jerry never won an Emmy — and Kevin wasn’t even nominated until last year … The work they were doing was so first-rate and definitely on par with the other nominees”,
Said creator-executive producer Michael J. Weithorn.
The show has had a reboot
Even though the show was watched by millions, it wasn’t enough for CBS to keep it going. The final season of the iconic show dropped in 2007, before being renewed for a prequel spin-off in 2016.
‘Kevin Can Wait’ debuted on CBS network between 2016 and 2018, with two highly-rated seasons. The spin-off shared similar cast with ‘The King of Queens’. The show stars Leah Remini, Taylor Spreitler, Mary-Charles Jones, James DiGiacomo, Gary Valentine, and others. The story of the prequel revolved around Kevin James as a retired police officer who tackles the challenges that come with being a single dad.
While fans claim that there are similarities between the shows, Kevin James denies it. ‘Kevin Can Wait‘ was a darling of the audience, but despite that, it was cancelled after two seasons due to the creators’ controversial casting change. The show sent a shock wave by letting go of Erinn Hayes (Kevin’s wife) by killing off her character and bringing in Leah Remini instead. The creators wanted to bring in James’ co-star from ‘The Kings of Queens’, but their move backfired and was despised by the audience. This mistake cost the show their ranking and soon it was cancelled.
Till date, fans hope they can make up to it by making a comeback and releasing ‘The King of Queens’ Season 10.
Will Kaley Cuoco join the cast for season 10?
Honestly, there’s no official update from CBS on ‘The King of Queens’ Season 10 yet. But that hasn’t stopped fans from hoping to see their favourite on-screen couple Doug and Carrie revived again.
In the television world, you never know what could turn around and pay you a second visit, so if CBS goes ahead with the decision to bring the show back for a brand new season, it would be interesting to see which actors make it to the cut.
