‘The Umbrella Academy’ – The story so far
‘The Umbrella Academy’ is a Netflix original created and developed by Steve Blackman and Jeremy Slater. The show has been adapted from a comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way. Endowed with a star-studded cast including Ellen Page, the show follows superhero siblings adopted into a dysfunctional household. The superheroes come together in an attempt to solve the mysterious death of their father and to save the world from a looming apocalypse.
Season 2 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ aired this year in July and took fans for a ride. The siblings time travelled and found themselves settling down back in the ‘60s, right in the face of yet another apocalypse. They swerved death as Lila and The Handler wreaked havoc across their lives.
Nevertheless, Vanya and company returned to Hargreeves HQ, only to stare at the face of a new challenge. Turns out, Hargreeves HQ is now owned by The Sparrow Academy. Will season 3 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ return to dive more into the superhero family madness? That is the question!
Jordan Claire Robbins teases return of Grace Hargreeves
While fans are still wondering if Hargreeves will be pitted against The Sparrow Academy in season 3 of the ‘The Umbrella Academy’, Jordan Claire Robbins has been playing with our minds, teasing her character’s return as Grace Hargreeves, the AI mother of the siblings. Season 2 of the Netflix original reintroduced Grace in the ’60s as a human being, unlike her AI self whom the siblings have left behind in 2019.

The 1960’s Grace is Reginald Hargreeves’ romantic interest for a brief period, based on which Reginald programs the robotic Grace of the future. Robbins returning as Grace for season 2 was a happy surprise for the fans, especially since things didn’t end quite explosively for AI Grace in season 1.
Robbins tried to be as candid as she could while remaining tight-lipped about any updates from season 3 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’. She would love to return to play the dual roles of Grace, which, she believes, has much more left to explore. In an exclusive interview with “Express”, Robbins said,
“Honestly, I would be excited to reprise either role! There is still so much left to explore with both characters, and I would love to continue to build on the work so far”. Robbins also teased the potential arrival of a season 3 of the show as she continued, “[Reginald] really walks that fine line that always leaves us wondering what he is capable of if his motivations are evil or from a more well-meaning place. Maybe we will find out in season three!”
When is ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 due?
Netflix hasn’t confirmed the return of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ for season 3 yet, although it’s a given. Not just fans, even the cast members are looking forward to a new season of the show. Moreover, the way things ended in season 2 has opened up Pandora’s box of possibilities for a new season.
Gerard Way, the writer of the original comics series, still has plans on the drawing board waiting to be executed, which means there’d be no shortage of content for the Netflix series. Creator Steve Blackman has huge but interesting plans for season 3 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ as well. He told “Inverse”, “It’s gonna be very complicated for the Umbrella Academy siblings”. “They don’t have their home anymore, their father is alive and well — which he shouldn’t be — so needless to say there will be more destructive family madness.”
Judging from all this, it won’t be long before Netflix gives the green signal to ‘The Umbrella Academy’ for season 3. As for when it could turn up on our screens, there’s really no definite answer. Covid-19 has kept most productions at bay, making it difficult to place a bet on a probable release date.
