‘Westworld’ Season 3 is ridiculously similar to ‘Person of Interest’
When HBO returned with the most awaited ‘Westworld’ Season 3, Jonathan took us closer to something we had already seen in CBS’ ‘Person of Interest’.
For its first two seasons, ‘Westworld’ played around the titular Western-inspired theme park. The series depicted the rise of the park’s android hosts’ sentience and how they turned against their makers. It also covered the human guests who used the park to carry out their violent plans.
‘Westworld’ explores the philosophical themes of what makes a man different from a machine. Who is, ultimately, more human? Season 3 studies the same difference and the philosophy of the show remains intact, but the action has moved far away from the park.
Dolores is out in the real world to take over the world for her own interest. It involves an advanced A.I. machine called Rehoboam. With the introduction of this machine, ‘Westworld’ came close to the plane of ‘Person of Interest’.
‘Person of Interest’ follows the team of Jim Caviezel’s Mr Reese and Michael Emerson’s Harold Finch, who use the data of a highly advanced surveillance program, simply called “The Machine”, to predict patterns to prevent crimes before they happen. Over time, the series grows, and another rival A.I. machine is introduced called “Samaritan”.
Now, in season 3 of ‘Westworld’, Dolores finds herself at the company headquarters of Incite, the home of the highly-advanced Rehoboam which charts the design of the human world.
Has Jonathan Nolan already set up the connection?
Both ‘Westworld’ and ‘Person of Interest’ feature powerful A.I. machines that observe the human mind. This overlap is no accident since the series share Jonathan Nolan as their creator. It is well known that the writer and producer has an affinity for this subject matter.
If we observe closely, we can sense that Jonathan is levelling the ground for the crossover between ‘Person of Interest’ and ‘Westworld’. The proceedings of ‘Westworld’ in season 3 are strongly hinting towards such a possibility. It would be interesting to watch when Rehoboam meets The Machine from ‘Person of Interest’.
Rehoboam meeting The Machine can take forward the scenario of ‘Person of Interest’ and the common thread between the two shows can help Nolan explore the subject on a wider plane.
Will HBO and CBS come together for the crossover?
The bigger question is will HBO and CBS agree to Jonathan’s idea of the crossover. The showrunner has created epic shows for both the networks. ‘Person of Interest’ and ‘Westworld’ has the potential of a creative sci-fi crossover that can extract humanity from humans with the help of AI machines.
To make this happen, HBO will have to but the rights of ‘Person of Interest’ from CBS, the possibility of which is dim. If they agree, it will be a milestone for cable TV networks. They must come together and work on crossovers to pull in more traffic that is increasingly moving towards Netflix and similar streamers. We hope that cable TV networks provide sumptuous content for a 21st-century audience. Till then check the Youtube link where Jonathan reacts on fan theories.
