Johnny Depp to join the Marvel superhero franchise?
Cinema lovers have always been obsessed with Johnny Depp’s charisma and presence on the screen. It would be underplaying it a little if one were to say that the “Deppheads” want the actor to consider major super-villain roles. Time and again, people have imagined and re-imagined what it would be like to see Depp playing major villains in superhero films. A few months ago, rumours about Depp playing Joker in the upcoming ‘Batman’ movie spread like wildfire after a fan art of Depp as the Joker went viral. Now that the world is done with assuming Depp’s liaison with DC, it’s time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Recently, an article by “We Got This Covered” conjectured about Johnny Depp being in the process of discussing roles with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to a trusted source of the website, Depp approached MCU in the hopes of bagging the role of Bounty Hunter, the notorious villain in ‘Ghostrider’.
Furthermore, it is also being said that Depp has not limited his choices only to Bounty Hunter. He might also be looking at characters like Corsair (the leader of Starjammers and father to Havok and Cyclops), and Korvac (the possible lead villain in ‘Captain Marvel 2’). However, as they say, it’s not a deal unless it’s on paper.

Could Marvel be a new option for Depp with Jack Sparrow out?
With Depp’s defamation lawsuit delayed, the 57-year-old actor could be expected to remain stuck in a legal battle for a long period. Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, came forward with a domestic violence lawsuit against the actor in 2016. Later that same year, Depp and Heard reached a divorce settlement of 7 million dollars.

In 2018, Heard started speaking of her story publicly, on media, without naming Depp anywhere. As a response, last year, Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard, the court proceedings of which continue to be delayed. Being stuck in this legal tug of war has definitely taken a toll on Depp’s career. One of the most significant backlashes of this was him losing his lucrative project ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.
Although Disney has not taken any official sides in the Depp-Heard legal battle, the chances of Depp returning as Jack Sparrow is slim. The sixth instalment of ‘Pirates of Caribbean’ has taken up Margot Robbie as one of the lead cast members. However, there are no signs of Jack Sparrow returning for the new instalment of the franchise.
Pirates Of The Caribbean: Which Character Are You? (Quiz)
Depp being dropped from the new ‘Pirates’ movie has definitely resulted in the wrath of the fans. Fans have not only declared their unwillingness to watch the new ‘Pirates’ movie but have also started a petition to bring Depp back. It is, however, unlikely that their honest efforts would bear any fruit anytime soon. In moments like these, with Johnny Depp losing popular projects, it would be a perfect opportunity for the actor if the Marvel Cinematic Universe indeed decides to take him up on his wish.
What do the fans have to say?
As much as people love Johnny Depp, fans are quite torn about wanting to see him join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A section of the fans feels too strongly against Depp entering MCU. A user wrote on “Reddit”, “I’m kind of ready for him to retire. I’d rather not see him in the MCU right now”. Another MCU fan wrote, “Johnny Depp has turned into Robert Downey Jr’s character from Tropic Thunder. I don’t want Depp anywhere near the MCU”.
While that is one side of the coin, there are surely fans who would like Depp to try out as many Marvel characters as possible. A fan jotted down all the Marvel characters for which Depp would be a perfect fit. He said, “Hammerhead, Chameleon, Toad, Jubilee, Cosmo (voice only), Sue Storm, The Living Tribunal, Death, Hercules, Man-Thing, Amadeus Cho, Mephisto, Radioactive Man… the possibilities are nearly limitless”.
Well, Depp has been magnificent in any and every role he has played, and there is no doubt he will rock any character he plays even in the MCU. Which Marvel character would you like Depp to play? Let us know in the comments below!
