Sweet and Sour Storyline
Without any further ado, let’s dive right into this. The show starts with the audience listening to Joe’s random thoughts which leaves the first impression of the character in our minds. Joe’s observational skills are simply phenomenal.
He has the ability to see through most people by noticing their dressing sense, their behaviour, or series of actions. Books have secured a special place in his heart due to his harsh upbringing by Mr. Mooney who owns the bookstore where Joe is the manager now. The show despite being dark has moments where the audience could sympathize with the protagonist and hopes for a happy ending for the character. His dating life is more than just a mess due to his habits of obsession and violence.
Joe’s Obsession: Why he can’t help it?
Joe Goldberg when in pursuit of Beck met with an accident and snuck into Peach’s house where she had a master plan to make Beck break it off with Joe. In that moment when he started hallucinating about Candace, he realized he was in dire need of medical attention but he stitched himself up saying to himself that it had happened before when he was 12, playing soccer.
There is a very high possibility that he had suffered a major head injury back which he didn’t pay much attention to. You can’t blame him for that. He had parents that were no less than a nightmare. Even he did tell them about the injury, the chances of them ignoring that is very high. The injury might’ve played a major role in who he has become.
The similarities between his girlfriends and his mother
Be it Candace, Beck, or Love, he chooses to date women that are a mess like his mom. Nobody’s perfect! Although his mom did scar him for a lifetime by abandoning him, he still sympathized with what she had gone through by being in a toxic relationship with his dad. This makes him accept the flaws in his partners.

The part where it gets messy is when he tries to take control of their lives by playing a father figure. This includes stalking, blackmailing, and killing. He always had a choice to move on and be a better man but his uncontrollable urge to take the law into his own hands did him and those around him no good.
Last Scene of Season 2: Big Hint about the new character
Joe in the end says is “this should be the end but he says this is not how destiny works. This is just the beginning. This is where I had to be, to meet you. So close, but worlds apart. I will figure out a way to get to you. See you soon, neighbour.”
These words tell us that Joe must’ve had a history with the mysterious character that we get to witness in the last shot. We can entertain the possibility of the new character being her mother. The line, “I will figure out a way to get to you” by Joe shows his anger and resentment that he has with that character.
What will he do? Where is Joe’s mother right now and why? Only Season 3 of You can answer.
