A fan theory has it that Netflix’s original ‘Dead to Me’ is a ‘Grace and Frankie’ prequel and we think it’s justified. Find out why!
In May 2019, a Reddit user watched the first season of ‘Dead to Me’ and pointed out that the homes on the show ‘Dead to Me‘ looked identical to the ones of ‘Grace and Frankie‘. Of course, back then, users also thought of the homes logically since both shows are Netflix originals and it seems like a reasonable thing to do.
Highlights:
- Exploring why fans believe ‘Dead to Me’ is a ‘Grace and Frankie’ prequel
- Both shows have more than 1 similarity
- What we got from these Netflix original comedy shows
But come 2020, more fans are starting to pick up on the similarities between both the shows. So is ‘Dead to Me’ a ‘Grace and Frankie’ prequel? Before we get to that here’s the who’s who and what’s what of both the shows.
Into the future with ‘Grace and Frankie’
Known as one of the first few great comedy shows as a Netflix original, ‘Grace and Frankie’ seemed to match the likes of people of all ages but hit especially close to home for women.
If you watched it as a woman who is not in her prime, then you’ve taken all of ‘Grace and Frankie’s’ highs and lows as your own. If you’re a young woman, we know you’ve seen issues being handled with dignified taste and for any other fan, female or otherwise, it’s hard to write off this show due to other aspects.

An 82-year-old Jane Fonda brings Grace to life and we can’t find anyone more perfect than Lily Tomlin for the role of Frankie. Even at their age, their shenanigans are hilarious: from being frenemies to best friends, exploring the dating scene to the men from their past, their kids and neighbours, and just every single member of the cast who truly delivered on this show.
All in all, the show is in our books for being politically correct and visually wonderful and the end hits the sweet spot by depicting how their lives have come full circle. Fans thought that recreating a show like ‘Grace and Frankie’ would be impossible, but are they wrong?

‘Dead to Me’: The past ‘Grace and Frankie’?
It truly takes a lot to strike a balance between comedy and drama with a hint of thrill, but Liz Feldman managed to do just that by making this incredible thriller. The show stars Christina Applegate as a woeful Jen Harding and Linda Cardellini as an enigmatic Judy Hale.
‘Dead to Me’ unfolds the lives of these nuanced characters and goes on to make these characters seem more retable with the progression of the show. With the ending of every episode, you’re guaranteed to be left with bated breath and a warmer heart. Much to the fans’ delight, ‘Dead to Me’ Season 2 released earlier this year only to prove to them that the show was worth the wait. But it also struck more keen fans as something they had experienced before.
It’s the Netflix fans’ wor(l)d
Word on the street is that there are more than just 1 or 2 similarities when it comes to ‘Dead to Me’ and ‘Grace and Frankie‘. A fan also tweeted about how he thought ‘Dead to Me’ seemed like the prequel to ‘Grace and Frankie’ that he’s been waiting for. Here’s what else fans realised:
The Beach Houses: It is like the Reddit thread from before that noticed the similar houses. Remember when Jen was in the million-dollar beach real estate business? Well, Grace was also keen on living in her San Diego beach home after the divorce.
More Than Mind Twins: Grace and Jen are both headstrong, temperamental blonde babes, with a knack for telling their friends what’s really on their mind. Frankie and Judy are both free souled brunettes who rely on their crystals and spiritual connections to get by. In both shows, both the characters add balance to the scales.
The Men: Both the characters in both shows are seemingly drawn together only because of the loss of the men in their lives. ‘Grace and Frankie”s husbands go from being business law partners to real partners. Whereas Jen’s late husband causes her to befriend Judy over the loss of her ex-fiancée. All of their characters seem strangely intimate and it’s because of these similarities based on loss and grief.
Grace also admits that she was never truly happy in her marriage while Jen speaks about how she and her husband would constantly bicker at each other. What’s more, both these characters have husbands that cheat on them. Now, if it is all coincidental, we buy that, but Netflix has every reason to link these two now that fans smell the idea of this and everyone seems to be on board with the idea of ‘Dead to Me’ being a ‘Grace and Frankie’ prequel.
It certainly looks like both shows are seen as the best Netflix originals with two female leads. So, is ‘Dead to Me’ is a ‘Grace and Frankie’ prequel? Tell us what you think. Write your comments in the box below!
