The finale of ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, titled “Stay”, premiered on May 14 this year. It opens with a shooting at the courthouse, and chaos breaks out. Since then, fans have been seeking answers to this pressing question – When will season 7 release?
What is the show about?
‘How to Get Away with Murder’ is a legal thriller that largely revolves around the life of a reputed criminal lawyer and professor, Annalise Keating. Keating handpicks five efficient law students from Philadelphia University as interns for her firm. But here comes the twist – they find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery and this changes everything and turns their world upside down.
Created by Peter Nowalk, the legal drama first dropped on September 25, 2014, and went on to receive a positive response from the audiences and critics for its gripping narrative, unpredictable twists, multi-faceted characters, and LGBTQ representation.
Interestingly, for her electrifying performance, Viola Davis, the lead of all six seasons of the series, became the first black woman to win an Emmy Award in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. Throughout the six seasons, the mystery drama also garnered several accolades, including the American Film Institute Award for Television Program of the Year and bagged multiple Emmy Awards.
The main cast of the thriller
The ensemble cast for season six included Viola Davis, 54, who led the show for the sixth season, Billy Brown as Nate Lahey who starred in the show since the first episode. Nate played Annalise’s on-again, off-again love interest and, more recently, friend, since the series began in 2014.
Aja Naomi King, who starred as Michaela Pratt, received praise from critics for her character development. In the viewers’ opinion, she was the most determined of Annalise’s students and went from being a selfish know-it-all to a caring team player. Jack Falahee plays Connor Walsh, one of Annalise’s students since the first season of the drama.
Matt McGorry stars as Asher Millstone, one of Annalise’s clumsiest students. Asher often feels like an outsider but has proven to be loyal to the gang when they need him. Through his character, the show introduced a feminist voice that openly speaks about a range of issues affecting society. Liza Weil stars as Bonnie Winterbottom, Annalise’s right-hand woman who moved audiences with her lifetime role.
Will there be a season 7?
‘How to Get Away with Murder’ Season 6 released on September 26, 2019, and its last season so far, season six, aired on May 14, 2020, including 15 episodes. All episodes are available for streaming on ABC.
As far as the possibility of season 7 of the show is concerned, here’s what we know.
On July 11, 2019, ABC announced that the sixth season of legal thriller will be its last.
“Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do – as it did here”, series executive producer and showrunner Peter Nowalk said.
“I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers, and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years. I also want to thank our fans.”
Viola Davis even took to Instagram to post a goodbye post. In the caption, Viola expressed her gratitude towards the loyal audience and the rest of the cast and crew members of the legal series.
From what it looks like, ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ Season 7 may not happen anytime soon. On the bright side, however, we can at least be content with the fact that the creator was granted the opportunity to end the show on his own terms and not because of low ratings.
Peter Nowalk even told “Deadline”,
“For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom”.
If you’re still wondering whether the show will come back in the future, the chances look very slim as of now. However, it’s reasonable to hope that Nowalk may decide to comes up with a spin-off, a few years down the line perhaps. Until that day, fans can always enjoy re-watching their favourite episodes or re-runs of the show on ABC.
