A recent episode of the MCU TV show ‘Moon Knight’ continued a key Marvel trend, which was earlier broken by its biggest release to date ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
MCU has been a trendsetter in many ways. Over the last decade and a half, when the franchise was being set up, it has come this far to become the biggest film franchise of all time. Over the course of several films, MCU has seeped into pop culture like anything. With the lines from the MCU films, along with the catchphrases by the characters, everything is immediately recognizable. But the biggest earner of MCU thus far, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ruined a major trend for the viewers. It came across a true disappointment coming from a film franchise that is known for its smartly infused easter eggs and masterful continuity management.

Avengers: Endgame broke a very specific example of latter
In the recent episode of the MCU series ‘Moon Knight’, the fans witnessed a moment that had been a Marvel films staple for a long time, a main character looking into the CCTV. It started way back in 2016 with ‘Captain America: Civil War’ when Bucky stared into a CCTV. After that, it was Wanda in ‘WandaVision’. But how does ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ruin the trend?

Avengers Endgame ruined MCU trends
Well, there was one thing common among the MCU CCTV glares, they were always made by the villains or the anti-heroes. But in the ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the directors made our beloved Ant-Man, aka Scott Lang stare through the CCTV. He isn’t a villain or an anti-hero. In fact, he is as far from causing anybody any harm as possible. Whether it was a mistake or a deliberate attempt to foreshadow Scott’s descent into anti-heroism later, is still debatable. But as it stands, for now, MCU missed the mark on this.
In the ‘Endgame’, Scott Lang is trying to contact the Avengers when everything has been ruined by Thanos. Half of the world’s population has been wiped out, which includes some of our favourite superheroes. So, when Ant-Man finally comes into the picture and knows a way to undo it, he contacts our heroes. He stands outside, staring into the door camera and reminds the heroes that he was the guy from the airport who gets really big. He was referring to the finale in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, in which Ant-Man was a part of the final battle.
However, if look into it through the context of ‘Endgame’, we can safely assume that Marvel broke their trend. But if we take a look at the context of Scott’s part life, he may not come across as sweet as he has now become. Apparently, he has a criminal history and thus, his character has grey shades. But that’s all in the past. But if we look at the other CCTV looks, Bucky ended up becoming a good guy and Wanda also used to be a nice girl once. Hence, the CCTV look can be the indication that the character looking through has a complex character that is not one dimensional.
One theory also goes that MCU doesn’t take itself very seriously. Most of the characters there make self-parodies time and again. Hence, this little event perhaps deserves a pass, as long as we are entertained.
