Recap of ‘The Affair’
The popular drama series, ‘The Affair’, follows the extra-marital affair of Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and Alison Lockhart. Noah is a struggling novelist who moves to Montauk with his family. Alison works as a waitress at dinner. Even though Noah is happily married with four children, he dislikes the fact that they are majorly dependent on his father-in-law’s income. We also see Alison struggling in her marriage after the devastating death of her four-year-old son. Both Noah and Alison find more comfort and understanding in each other than in their relationships.
The next season of ‘The Affair’ involved dealing with their respective infidelity. It also leads to the dissolution of their marriages. Things turn around when Alison’s brother-in-law dies. We are taken a few years ahead to where Noah gets released from the prison. He also finds love in Juliette. Noah moves to Los Angeles to be closer to his kids. Another extramarital affair occurs on the show. It involves Helen and her new partner Vik. Surprisingly, both of them cheat on each other with the same girl. Season 4 of ‘The Affair’ sadly ended with Alison’s death.
‘The Affair’ final season
The final season of ‘The Affair’ brought Noah and Helen together as they prepared for the wedding of their eldest daughter, Whitney (Julia Goldani Telles). To gain Whitney’s trust back, Noah singlehandedly planned the entire wedding. The finale felt incomplete without the presence of Cole (Joshua Jackson). Before the finale season, it was shared that Jackson would leave ‘The Affair’. Though the time jump did reunite us with Alison and Cole’s daughter, Joanie (Anna Paquin).
In the finale, she ends up at Lobster Roll, where her mother met Noah. We got to know that the restaurant was now owned by Noah. Joanie talked about the one thing that no autopsy report could tell, that her mother loved her deeply. Noah then told her that Alison would have never chosen to leave. She sought mental-health treatment to be a better mother. She also went up against Cole and his second wife, Luisa (Catalina Sandino Moreno) to get her daughter back. Alison was killed by her colleague and love interest, Ben Cruz. There was also a brief mention of the #MeToo movement in which Noah was accused of sexual misconduct by several women.
Meanwhile, Helen finally gets her due in the finale. She suddenly leaves her daughter’s wedding and goes to see Noah at the Memory Motel. She confesses to Noah that she still loves him. Noah asks her to dance with him, and they end up reconciling that night. Many viewers affirmed that Noah and Helen end up reconciling permanently. In the final scene, Joanie takes Noah’s advice and goes home to her family. We also see Noah sitting by Helen’s gravestone and reading a novel by their daughter Stacey. Through that scene, we learn that Helen died in 2051.

Will ‘The Affair’ be revived for season 6?
While reporting about the fifth season of ‘The Affair’, Hollywood Reporter also mentioned that it would be the final season.
“We love the intimacy, the nuance, and the emotional honesty of ‘The Affair’s’ subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity. Sarah Treem has always envisioned this as a five-season series. We will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season”,
said Gary Levine, president of programming at Showtime Networks in a statement.
Hence, a season 6 with the old cast members seems highly unlikely. What do you think? Should there be season 6 of ‘The Affair’?
