Olivia Colman has been nominated in this year’s Primetime Emmy. However, she may not win any. Here’s why.
The Primetime Emmy nominations for the year have been declared and one category that has all eyes glued to it is that of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. For better or worse, the category is receiving acceptance and rejection from fans in equal measure. This is majorly because of some snubs, particularly that of Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul, after her particularly nuanced performance in the last season. Nevertheless, even amidst the current nominees, the competition is tough, and no matter how brilliant Olivia Colman is in The Crown as Queen Elizabeth II, her performance is a little paling as compared to the others. This makes us think, will the performance of Olivia Colman tick enough for her to earn an Emmy Awards?

- She is competing with the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Oh
Is an Emmy win difficult?
Who may dethrone Olivia Colman?
If we have to bet on one name, we would say Jennifer Aniston. The lady is back in black with her wooing and acting prowess in Apple TV +drama The Morning Show. The actress, who rose to fame with FRIENDS, already has an Emmy on her shelf and has numerous other nominations and awards to her credit. For her comeback performance in The Morning Show, she has already received a Screen Actors Guild Award and earned rave reviews.
This puts the argument strongly in favour of Aniston. This will also be the reason why Olivia Colman may wear the crown but will be dethroned when it comes to the Emmys. Not just Aniston, other performances are equally strong, with challenging characters and brilliant acting skills. Be it Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer from the British black comedy Killing Eve or even Laura Linney from Ozark, everybody brings more than predictability to the table.
This is different from The Crown, which combines fact and fiction to bring to the fore a story which is fascinating yet not a fable, and brings acts and circumstances that are already known to the mass. While Olivia Colman is brilliant as Queen Elizabeth II, somewhere along the line, other nominees outshine both the actress and the show.
Why Olivia Colman may not win the Emmy Crown
To be honest, with such strong performances in tow, when it comes to Emmy nominations, it seems a little dicey at the moment. While Olivia may not be the least experienced actor here, with the presence of Zendaya and Jodie Comer, one cannot deny the fact that both come with a better curiosity factor added to their performances.
This may be Zendaya’s first Primetime Emmy nomination, but the lady has already won a Black Reel Award from Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Further, Comer has also earned various nominations and an Emmy for her performance in Killing Eve. This, coupled with Aniston’s much-awaited comeback on television and Sandra Oh’s popularity and panache, weakens the case for Colman.
And we have not even started about Laura Linney, who comes with a list of long and rich wins and nominations of her own, with already a win at Webby Awards for her performance in Ozark.
Will Colman be able to beat the blues of so many expectations? It will have to be seen. For now, let’s enjoy the series and wait for the D-day when the winners will be announced.
