The movies, based upon the fantasy novels written by J.K Rowling, have captured the imaginations of millions of young children and adults who consider themselves manic, diehard fans of the Harry Potter series. It is also no secret that the fandom is content starved, fanfics and theatre plays can only do so much, unlike a real movie from the original series which is what fans would jump at.
What is ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’? What can we expect from it?
In 2016, Jack Thorne penned down a play based on J.K. Rowling’s earlier works and named it ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’. The play was shown all around the world starting from theatres in London from 2016 and also achieved much critical praise and accolades. It gained so much popularity that it is unofficially considered the eighth instalment of the original ‘Harry Potter’ movie series by its fans.
The story of the play takes us to the events after 19 years, after the events described in J.K. Rowling’s novel ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ where Harry Potter has become the head of law enforcement at the Ministry of Magic and his son, Albus Severus Potter, is joining Hogwarts as a young aspiring wizard. Albus makes friends with Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius Malfoy and gets sorted into the Slytherin house together with Scorpius, which comes as a surprise since Potters have long been part of Gryffindor. Albus and Harry have their own problems with each other due to Albus’s insecurities.
In order to prove himself and live up to his father’s name, he, along with Scorpius, decides to travel back in time with the help of a time-turner to save the life of Cedric Diggory, who had died in the Triwizard Tournament shortly after winning it. Despite their pure intentions, the results did not match their hopes, they severely changed the entire course of history and in order to correct it, they used the time-turner repeatedly, shifting from one version of the past to the other.
What does the producer and Warner Bros have to say about it?
For years, fans on the internet have been discussing how the play, which is in two parts, will be a great fit for a two-part movie. In an interview with a leading British entertainment portal, Harry Potter’s producer Lionel Wigram also expressed a similar desire. He said that he was enthused at that time to make a film if JK Rowling was on board. He said, “Whatever she wants, as far as I’m concerned, is right”.
The producer further went on, “I think, ‘The Cursed Child’ would make a great movie. Maybe at some point, she’ll be ready to do that. I think it’s got a wonderful, long, theatrical run and it works brilliantly as a piece of theatre”. He added, “I also love the fact that there is another aspect of the Harry Potter franchise which is completely different from everything else out there. I think it’s very special as it is and there will be a time when she’s maybe ready to do it as a movie”.
Dispelling all the rumours surrounding ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’
Despite all the rumours making the rounds on social media, recently Warner Bros has announced- “’Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ is a stage play, with no plans for there to be a film”.
This continues to be the official stand of the Hollywood studio. But one can hope that they change their mind and continue to expand their wizarding world property once the three ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movies are released.
